{"value"=>"<p>About twenty Caroline Norton letters were acquired between 1966 and 1981 under the auspices of the Pforzheimer Foundation through individual dealers. Since the Pforzheimer Collection's 1986 move to the New York Public Library, its Norton holdings have grown steadily through purchase both at auction and through individual dealers, mostly notably in the 1990s and early 2000s. Correspondence between Norton and Augusta Cowell, as well as the holograph hymn \"The Mourner\" and other material addressed or relating to Cowell was purchased at Sotheby's London, July 21-22, 1992, lot 69. Because the Pforzheimer Collection collects actively, its holdings may grow in the future as items become available.</p>"}

The writings comprise one holograph poem, one holograph hymn, five presentation inscriptions, and a series of holograph journal entries. Correspondents include Adam and Charles Black, publishers; Augusta Cowell, composer; Abraham Hayward, essayist and translator; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, writer; and Thomas Noon Talfourd, writer, judge, and politician.</p>"}
