{"value"=>"<p>The Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM) was a Head Start program founded in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's campaign to address poverty.</p> <p>CDGM fought poverty, racism, and unemployment by hiring Black Mississippi residents to work with the low-income, primarily Black, preschool children in their communities. The program operated eighty-seven centers throughout Mississippi with grant money from the federal Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO).</p> <p>The OEO withdrew funding after Mississippi Senator John Stennis, local groups, and the Ku Klux Klan targeted CDGM. The program continued to operate through 1966 with help from a support group, the Friends of Children of Mississippi, and a brief restoration of funding from the OEO. In 1967, the OEO once again defunded CDGM and the program ended operations.</p>"}

The original format of the audio recordings was open reel, with many items containing two or more parts. Five audio recordings are CDGM meetings discussing issues of OEO funding.</p> <p>There are three audio recordings which are not CDGM meetings, including two meetings of the Opportunities Industrialization Center, which was also funded by the OEO, and an interview with Alcorn College students about an incident of police violence that occurred in Mississippi in 1968.</p>"}
