{"value"=>"<p>The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) is a nonprofit organization of Black trade union members affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO).</p> <p>William Lucy, secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of State, County, Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and the donor of this collection, co-founded the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists in Chicago in 1972 with four other labor leaders: Nelson \"Jack\" Edwards, vice president of United Auto Workers (UAW); Charles A. Hayes, vice president of United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW); Cleveland Robinson, president of Distributive Workers of America, District 65; and William Simons, president of Washington Teachers Union (WTU), Local 6.</p> <p>The CBTU is still active, and continues to organize Black workers. It also registers and educates Black voters to increase turnout and affect public policy. The CBTU represents fifty trade union chapters in the United States and one in Ontario, Canada.</p>"}

Four videos are compilations of the conference that took place from May 22 to May 24. Three video recordings are excerpts featuring speeches by three of the conference's high-profile speakers, arranged in the order of their appearance at the conference: Reverend Jesse Jackson, CBTU president William Lucy, and Faye Williams.</p> <p>The convention included an opening session, plenary sessions, performances, and an awards dinner. Topics discussed include the economic issues and public policies of the Reagan administration affecting Black workers nationally, such as housing, jobs, and health, as well as global events that impacted Black workers, including responses to the apartheid regime of South Africa and U.S. intervention in Grenada. Performances by the Dello Thedford Singers and the Voices of Local 420 choir are featured.</p>"}
