It was produced by Essence Communications, Inc., the firm that publishes the long-running Black women's lifestyle magazine of the same name. Susan L. Taylor (January 23, 1946-), who served as editor-in-chief of the magazine from 1981 to 2000, executive produced and hosted the television program. <span class=\"title\">Essence</span> aired on more than fifty stations via WNBC-TV. Featuring segments on arts, culture, health and beauty, and other issues, each episode focused on Black women's interests. Taylor frequently included co-hosts such as radio host Gary Byrd, journalist and community activist Felipe Luciano, and musician James \"J.T.\" Taylor.</p>"}
