{"value"=>"
Positively Black is a public affairs television program that first aired on New York City's WNBC-TV in 1970. Community activist Gustav \"Gus\" Heningburg (May 18, 1930- October 15, 2012) hosted the show from 1972 through the 1990s, occasionally joined by journalist Carol Jenkins (November 30, 1944-). The program continues to air weekly on WNBC.

Through the first decades of Positively Black, its weekly half-hour episodes generally focused on one or two topics relevant to Black communities, with in-studio or on-location discussions and interviews. The program, as well as Heningburg as its host, garnered many awards and critical praise, including a 1977 nomination from the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Outstanding Informational Program; Communications Excellence to Black Audiences (CEBA) Awards for Merit in 1979, 1983, and 1988; a 1988 CEBA Award for Excellence; the 1981 Newsmakers Award from the Long Island Chapter of the National Association of Media Women, and WNBC-TV's award for Outstanding Contributions and Talent on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of \"Positively Black\" in 1990. Notable guests have included Romare Bearden, Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson, and Spike Lee.
"}

The bulk of the collection consists of the broadcast episodes. Outtakes are available for three episodes: Episode #360: \"An interview with John H. Johnson, Part 2\"; Episode #409: \"Shirley Chisholm\"; and Episode #436: \"The State of Affairs between Blacks and Jews in New York.\" The original collection documentation unevenly informs episode details such as the topics covered, guest information, and the item dates, which are the earliest provided and may reflect the original taping or broadcast date.
"}
