abstract
{"value"=>"The New York International Fringe Festival, or FringeNYC, was a fringe theater festival that was held between 1997 and 2019 in New York City, and was one of the largest fringe festivals in North America. The New York International Fringe records document the submission process of productions that were eventually staged at the festival, as well as select administrative materials. This collection is dedicated primarily to the application materials of shows that were accepted to the festival, consisting of jury evaluations, participant agreements, press releases, marketing materials, programs, correspondence, photographs, slides, scores, scripts, blurbs, bios, resumes, audiovisual materials, and tech survey forms, sometimes with diagrams attached."}

{"value"=>"
The New York International Fringe Festival, or FringeNYC, was a fringe theater festival that was held between 1997 and 2019 in New York City, and was one of the largest fringe festivals in North America. Fringe theater, a term originating from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, refers to theater produced outside of mainstream theatrical settings that is often non-traditional or experimental in nature. The festival was founded by Aaron Beall, John Clancy, Jonathan Harris (also known as Ezra Buzzington), and Elena K. Holy, and was produced by The Present Company. Holy served as Artistic Director. The roots of the festival date to the mid-1990s, when Elena Holy's Present Company produced Americana Absurdum by Brian Parks to critical acclaim. Peers encouraged the Present Company to submit the production to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, but Holy found it not financially feasible. A town meeting was held to discuss the possibility of mounting a New York City fringe; the meeting was attended by an estimated 350 people and Holy took that attendance number as a mandate.

From 1997 until 2016, the festival operated in Lower Manhattan, usually taking place in October and encompassing approximately twenty stages. After a brief hiatus the festival returned for 2018 and 2019 on a smaller scale, with some performances in the outer boroughs. Unlike most other fringe festivals, potential shows were evaluated and accepted to the festival by a jury. Applications were submitted by category, which by 2006 had grown to include dance-movement, clown, mask, puppet, vaudeville, sideshow, magic, burlesque, play, and musical.

In addition to the shows, FringeNYC also included many side events, such as educational workshops and lectures under the banner FringeU, FringeART (art events), FringeAL FRESCO (free outdoor performances), and FringeJR (children's events).

Among the shows that had their premiere at FringeNYC were the Tony award-winning musical Urinetown; the musical adaptation of Debbie Does Dallas; and the American English-language premiere of The Black Rider, a collaboration between Robert Wilson, Tom Waits, and William S. Burroughs. Other notable productions include Hugh Hysell's all-male adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers' Matt & Ben.
"}

{"value"=>"
The focus of the collection is the shows accepted and performed at the yearly festivals. Thus, the majority of the collection consists of application materials and other supporting documentation that was submitted to the Fringe staff. Because of this, the collection mostly consists of show files arranged by year of the festival and then alphabetically by production title within that year. There is a very small amount of administrative material related to the promotion of the festival.

Show files usually consist of one folder per show presented at that year's festival; occasionally the show encompasses two folders or contains electronic materials and/or audiovisual materials. The files can consist of application forms and supporting materials (including jury evaluations, mostly limited to the 1997 files), participant agreements, press releases and marketing materials (mostly for the Fringe staging of the productions), programs, correspondence between the submitters and the festival, photographs, slides, scores, scripts, blurbs, bios, resumes, license agreements, and tech survey forms, sometimes with diagrams attached. The applications occasionally contained visual scripts, artwork, and audiovisual materials. Occasionally the audiovisual materials are for other shows produced by the same company, and not the show in question. Not every show has the same types of listed documents and the first two years have the most material per show. All of the material refers to shows that were accepted by the festival with no material for the rejected.

The administration grouping consists of the only information related to the general running of the festival and is confined to documents related to the website.
"}
