{"value"=>"<p>Michael Howard Shamberg (1952-2014) was an American film and video producer who is best known for his production work with the British band New Order.</p> <p>Shamberg was born in New York City on October 27, 1952, and raised in Pikesville, Maryland. He attended Villanova University between 1970 and 1972, where he studied economics, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1972 to 1974, where he pursued painting and sculpture. After completing his studies, Shamberg moved to New York City and began working in the film and video production industry.</p> <p>Between 1975 and 1977, Shamberg worked at the Kitchen Center for Video and Music as an administrative assistant and video associate. During this time he co-produced and co-edited Nancy Holt's <span class=\"title\">Resolve</span> for WNET-TV, and curated a series of artist videos for the Geneva Art Museum in Switzerland.</p> <p>In 1976, Shamberg served as the director of video documentation at the premier for Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's opera, <span class=\"title\">Einstein on the Beach</span> in Avignon, France. The following year he partnered with Carlota Schoolman at Corday NYC, a non-profit video production company that provided administrative and technical services to independent television programs.</p> <p>Shamberg made his foray into the music industry in 1980 with <span class=\"title\">Tribeca</span>, a short film for the British band A Certain Ratio. Shortly thereafter, Shamberg filmed a New Order concert in New York City, which set into motion his creative partnership with the band. He produced many New Order music videos including \"Blue Monday,\" \"Confusion,\" \"the Perfect Kiss,\" \"Bizarre Love Triangle\", \"True Faith,\" \"Touched by the Hand of God,\" \"Run,\" \"Regret,\" and \"World (The Price of Love),\" collaborating with such directors as Jonathan Demme, Robert Longo, Kathryn Bigelow, Robert Breer, William Wegman, Robert Frank, and Philippe Decouflé. Shamberg also operated as the band's creative director, which included overseeing album artwork, publicity, and commissioning artists for collaboration.</p> <p>Shamberg helped to found and then manage Factory US, the American outpost of the British record label, Factory Records. Shamberg oversaw operations in New York City, releasing albums by bands such as Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, New Order, Thick Pigeon, and the Durutti Column.</p> <p>In 1988, Shamberg formed Cascando Studios, a production company that focused on independent films, music videos, television segments, and artists' multimedia work. After founding Cascando, Shamberg produced music videos for the B-52s, Aimee Mann, Grace Jones, Throwing Muses, Kristen Hersh, the Indigo Girls, R.E.M., Patti Smith, and New Order. He was also the executive producer of the title sequence for the television show <span class=\"title\">America's Most Wanted</span>; for a number of Nickelodeon station identification spots directed by William Wegman; and served as a producer, editor, and camera operator for film and video installations for such artists as Lawrence Weiner, Dan Graham, Nancy Holt, Vito Acconci, and Robert Wilson.</p> <p>Shamberg began taking on more directorial work in the 1990s, directing and editing Dan Graham's <span class=\"title\">Two-Way Mirror Cylinder Inside Cube</span> for the DIA center for the arts and <span class=\"title\">Performance/Audience/Mirror</span> video catalog for the EA Generali Foundation in Vienna, Austria. In 1995, he edited and directed the electronic press kit for Virgin Records' Joy Division tribute album, <span class=\"title\">A Means to an End: The Music of Joy Division</span>. The following year, Shamberg directed his first feature film, <span class=\"title\">Souvenir</span>, which was shot in Paris and featured actors Stanton Miranda, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, Adam Hann-Byrd, and Melvil Poupaud.</p> <p>Between 2000 and 2002, Shamberg taught at the school of visual arts at Bennington College. During this time he was diagnosed with a progressive neurological disease that began to impact his ability to work. Shamberg returned to the Baltimore area in the mid-2000s and died from his illness on November 1, 2014.</p>"}

The Subseries does not consist solely of Factory artists, and also includes bands and artists Shamberg was connected with during the time he was managing the New York City Factory offices. Of special interest is an assortment of CKM recordings, the short-lived early 1980s New York City band that featured Kim Gordon, Stanton Miranda, and Christine Hahn. There are also a few recordings from Factory records founder, Tony Wilson, that feature his broadcasting work on Granada TV.</p> <p>The Cascando Studios materials contain audio and video recordings of projects Shamberg took on at his own production company after Factory Records folded in 1992. Items are arranged alphabetically by artist or subject, and contain recordings by such performers as Joy Division, Stanton Miranda, and New Order. There is also a selection of electronic press kits for such artists as Royal Trux, Sparklehorse, and Joy Division.</p> <p>The Music Videos are arranged alphabetically by artist or band, and features recordings by such bands as the B-52s, Luka Bloom, Kristin Hersh, Indigo Girls, Grace Jones, Aimee Mann, New Order, R.E.M., Patti Smith, Talking Heads, and Throwing Muses. Production files from these music videos are found in Subseries III.A., and photographs of many of the shoots are located in Series IV.</p> <p>Films comprise video recordings of the films Shamberg directed, <span class=\"title\">P.S.
