{"value"=>"<p>These interviews of George Avakian took place in the Vincent Astor Gallery of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts on September 23rd and 24th, 2016. The exhibition <span class=\"title\">Music For Moderns: The Partnership of George Avakian and Anahid Ajemian</span> ran in the Astor Gallery from June to September of that year, and Avakian was interviewed as he viewed the exhibition on its final two days. The exhibition was composed of documents, photographs, sound recordings, and other material drawn largely from the personal papers of Avakian and his wife, Anahid Ajemian, held by the Music Division.</p> <p>The interviewers were George Boziwick, then Chief of the Music Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts; Matthew Snyder, archivist in the Special Collections Division of the library, and a former personal archivist for George Avakian; David Ostwald, a Louis Armstrong scholar and close friend of Avakian's; and Matthew Leskovic, Avakian's former personal archivist.</p> <p>The interviews are comprised of 17 sound recordings. Seven were recorded on September 23rd, and 10 on September 24th. The total time of the recordings is two hours, 57 minutes, 49 seconds.</p> <p>Major topics discussed in the interview include Avakian's family; his first interview of Benny Goodman; Yale University and Marshall Stearns; Decca Records and the <span class=\"title\">Chicago Jazz</span> album; Columbia Records; Avakian's army experience and post-bombing visit to Hiroshima, Japan; British and European attitudes toward jazz and the worldwide spread of the music; Anahid Ajemian; the Music For Moderns concert series; Erroll Garner; the jazz history classes taught by Avakian at New York University; John Cage; Louis Armstrong; Duke Ellington; Dave Brubeck; Edith Piaf; Miles Davis; Ravi Shankar; and Keith Jarrett.
