{"value"=>"<p>The Dorian Wind Quintet is one of the longest continually-active chamber music groups in the world. Formed in the summer of 1961 at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, its founding members were John Perras (flute), David Perkett (oboe), Arthur Bloom (clarinet), Jane Taylor (bassoon), and William G. Brown (French horn). The personnel have evolved over the decades, and the members as of 2016 were Gretchen Pusch (flute), Gerard Reuter (oboe), Benjamin Fingland (clarinet), Adrian Morejon (bassoon) and Karl Kramer-Johansen (horn). Jane Taylor remained with the Quintet until 2002. Other notable and long-serving members included Reuter, clarinetist Jerry Kirkbride, and flautist Karl Kraber.</p> <p>The group made its New York recital debut in October 1961 and toured Europe during the following season, giving part of a series of concerts sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Among the countries the Quintet has visited are India, Sri Lanka, Greece, Turkey, and several West African nations. The group often teaches in university and workshop settings, and has had residencies at several colleges in the SUNY and CUNY systems.</p> <p>In addition to performing the standard wind quintet repertory, the ensemble encourages and commissions contemporary composers to write for the medium. Among those who have produced works especially for the Quintet are Luciano Berio, Lukas Foss, Mario Davidovsky, and Jacob Druckman. The group has also commissioned transcriptions by Henry Brant of works originally written for strings or keyboard. Its recordings include the complete wind quintets of George Perle. The Quintet functions as a non-profit organization called the Dorian Wind Quintet Foundation.</p>"}

The largest components of the collection are sound recordings and programs.</p> <p>The sound recordings, dating from the 1960s to the early 2000s, consist largely of concerts, radio broadcasts, and studio performances by the Quintet. They feature the Quintet performing music by Luciano Berio, Darius Milhaud, Paul Taffanel, J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Nielsen, Elliott Carter, Billy Childs, Igor Stravinsky, Jacques Ibert, Anton Reicha, and Jacob Druckman, among others. A small quantity of the sound recordings is of other wind quintets, music sent to the group for its consideration, and recordings of individual members of the Quintet in other settings. These include a solo performance by flautist Karl Kraber and a performance by and interview with the Da Vinci Chamber Ensemble, which featured Jane Taylor and Barry Benjamin. Some recordings have information on the place or occasion of the recording, and listings of composers performed. A portion of the recordings are digital transfers of analog originals, created by the donor. Some of these are accompanied by additional information in the form of HTML files. The recordings are arranged chronologically within three divisions: performances and recordings by the Dorian Quintet; demonstration recordings or performances by other musicians; and unidentified works and performers.</p> <p>The programs, housed in 17 volumes of binders, date from 1961 to 2001 and offer comprehensive coverage of the Quintet's performance career.</p> <p>The touring files document visits to Europe, West Africa, India, Greece, Turkey, and the Middle East. They hold itineraries; programs; correspondence with the U.S State Department and local presenters; photographs; and memorabilia.</p> <p>The letters file contains letters from composers, personal notes to Jane Taylor, and letters regarding business and publicity.</p> <p>The management files can be found under Columbia Artists Management Inc. (CAMI) and Kazuko Hillyer International. They contain contracts, itineraries, programming information, and correspondence with the Quintet. Additional contracts, some of which were executed through CAMI, are filed under contracts.</p> <p>The rest of the subject files hold clippings; histories of the Quintet; grant applications to the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts; repertoire, recording, and program lists; files regarding residencies in the State University of New York system; datebooks belonging to Jane Taylor; and files on individuals, concerts, other events, or publishers. The Dorian Wind Quintet Foundation file contains development information and correspondence with funders.</p> <p>The scores hold manuscript or published versions of scores performed, commissioned, or considered for performance by the Quintet. Most have annotations, composer autographs, or both. Some pieces have full scores and parts, but most have either a full score, parts, or single parts. The scores include music by Lukas Foss, Luciano Berio, Richard Rodney Bennett, Jacob Druckman, Paul Hindemith, Roger Kellaway, Joel Chadabe, and Billy Childs. Also present is an arrangement of Beethoven's <span class=\"title\">String Quartet No. 14</span> by Henry Brant, and sketches and unidentified manuscripts.</p> <p>Photographs document the Quintet's earliest days at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1961 and its tours of West Africa and India in the 1960s and 1970s. They also hold publicity shots of the group and its individual members from 1961 to the early 2000s.</p> <p>Collection content dating from before the formation of the Dorian Quintet in 1961 documents the career of Jane Taylor.
