{"value"=>"<p>Jennifer Tipton (b. 1937) is an American lighting designer for dance, theater, opera, and art installation. She has worked on and Off-Broadway, as well as toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Many of her designs have been adapted and readapted for multiple stages. Tipton has taught theatrical lighting at the Yale School of Drama since 1981. Among her achievements are two Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design for Andrei Serban's production of <span class=\"title\">The Cherry Orchard</span> (1977), and for <span class=\"title\">Jerome Robbins' Broadway</span> (1989), for which she also won a Drama Desk Award. She has won two Henry Hewes Awards, an Olivier, the American Theatre Wing Award, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, the Jerome Robbins Prize, multiple Drama Desk Awards, and an OBIE for Sustained Achievement. Tipton was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2008.</p> <p>After graduating from Cornell University in 1958, Tipton moved to New York City and began taking dance classes at the Martha Graham Studio. In the early 1960s, she joined The Merry-Go-Rounders, a small dance company for children, and soon became the group's assistant director. It was in this new role that Tipton's interest in stage lighting began, so she began coursework at Connecticut College with lighting designer Tom Skelton, with whom she later apprenticed. She soon began assisting Skelton with lighting for the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and eventually became the company's full-time lighting designer.</p> <p>By the mid-1960s, Tipton was fully immersed in stage lighting, in both dance and theater. Over the next four decades, Tipton designed lighting for hundreds of dance productions, including shows for Marion Scott, The Joffrey Ballet, Twyla Tharp, American Ballet Theatre, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jerome Robbins, Shen Wei, José Limón, Kazuko Harbiyashi, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, The San Francisco Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada.</p> <p>Tipton's Broadway debut was a 1969 revival of <span class=\"title\">Our Town</span>. Other Broadway credits include <span class=\"title\">Murder Among Friends</span>, <span class=\"title\">For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf</span>, <span class=\"title\">The Cherry Orchard</span>, <span class=\"title\">The Pirates of Penzance</span>, <span class=\"title\">Sophisticated Ladies</span>, <span class=\"title\">Singin' in the Rain</span>, <span class=\"title\">Jerome Robbins' Broadway</span>, and <span class=\"title\">James Joyce's The Dead</span>. She has worked with the New York Shakespeare Festival, American Repertory Theatre (Mass.), the Yale Repertory Theatre, and Robert Wilson. In 1991, Tipton directed a production of <span class=\"title\">The Tempest</span> at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Among Tipton's opera credits are <span class=\"title\">Agrippina</span>, <span class=\"title\">Alceste</span>, <span class=\"title\">Il Trovatore</span>, and <span class=\"title\">The Magic Flute</span>. She has lighted shows at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Santa Fe Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.</p> <p>Since the 1990s, Tipton has expanded her work to include more fine art and multimedia work. In 1996, she lit \"Mine,\" an installation for artist Rona Pondick at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. She has also worked with sculptor Robert Gober, and designed \"Light Above the Hudson,\" a light installation for the Experimental Media Performing Arts Center building in Troy, New York. In 2010, Tipton collaborated with pianist Eteri Andjaparidze on \"Spectral Scriabin,\" a multimedia light show featuring colored lights and the music of Alexander Scriabin.</p>"}

The collection is arranged into two broad groups: Dance Files and Designs; and Theater, Opera, and Installation Files and Designs. Materials within each group are arranged alphabetically by production title, dance or theater company, or individual. The degree to which each entity is represented varies, though files are typically robust, containing comprehensive technical documentation of Tipton's process. Materials include lighting descriptions, lighting plots, ground plans, magic sheets, channel hook-ups, cue lists, set drawings, instrument schedules, focus maps, and fabric swatches for costumes or backdrops. Other materials, such as programs, scripts, costume sketches, photographs, and correspondence, are sometimes present, but the majority of the documents are technical in nature.</p> <p>In addition to papers and designs, the collection holds electronic records for some shows that Tipton worked on, including <span class=\"title\">The Birthday Party</span>, <span class=\"title\">Mourning Becomes Electra</span>, and <span class=\"title\">Da Gelo a Gelo</span>. Electronic records for <span class=\"title\">The Birthday Party</span> include color and instrument counts, as well as work notes. Laurie Anderson's <span class=\"title\">The End of the Moon</span> is also represented by electronic media, including focus charts and stage lighting plans. Photographs for the Builder's Group production of <span class=\"title\">Super Vision</span> are also electronic. Material created in lighting console software, such as Obsession and Lightwright, rely on obsolete software and hardware unavailable at the Library. Vectorworks CAD files are also unavailable. Disk images of lighting console disks are present in the electronic records in place of the inaccessible files.</p> <p>The most extensive dance files are those for the American Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet, Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, Dana Reitz, the National Ballet of Canada, The Hartford Ballet, and Paul Taylor. Lighting documents for <span class=\"title\">Jerome Robbins' Broadway</span> are filed under Robbins in the dance section. Materials and designs for the Builders Association, a performance and media company, are filed under the dance heading. Among the best-represented theater productions are <span class=\"title\">James Joyce's The Dead</span>, <span class=\"title\">Mourning Becomes Electra</span>, <span class=\"title\">Landscape of the Body</span>, <span class=\"title\">In the Penal Colony</span>, <span class=\"title\">Sophisticated Ladies</span>, <span class=\"title\">Singin' in the Rain</span>, and <span class=\"title\">Wrong Mountain</span>.<span class=\"title\">Il Trovatore</span>, <span class=\"title\">Da Gelo a Gelo</span>, and <span class=\"title\">The Magic Flute</span> are well-represented operas in the collection. Many of the files contain materials created for multiple productions of a given play, opera, or choreographic work. Opera files for <span class=\"title\">The Magic Flute</span>, for example, document Tipton's lighting in Cape Town, Brussels, Santa Fe, and Brooklyn.</p>"}
