{"value"=>"Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) was an American jurist and politician. He practiced law and held various political positions between 1884 and 1906. Twice elected governor of New York State, he resigned in 1910 to become an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court where he served until 1916. He returned to political life and was Secretary of State from 1921 to 1925. From 1926 to 1930 he held positions of judge for The Hague Tribunal Permanent Court of Arbitration and member of the Permanent Court of International Justice. He returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice in 1930 and served until his retirement in 1941. Collection consists of speeches made by Hughes, articles, memoranda, subject files, printed matter, and photographs. Speeches were made during his political campaigns and terms as governor of New York and cover topics such as women's suffrage, gambling, political corruption, and civil service reform between 1907 and 1910. Subject files include materials on the activities of the Water Supply Commission, the debate about direct nominations, local self-government and lotteries in New York, and the organization of the Democratic Party."}
