{"value"=>"
The Wilmerding family was a prominent New York family of German descent. The family was active in a number of New York City social clubs and business ventures.

Henry Augustus Wilmerding was born in New York City in 1802 and established the Wilmerding, Hoguet & Co. auction house. His son, Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding, attended Columbia University and maintained his own investment firm, Gray & Wilmerding and a business with W.B. Bisset. {"value"=>"
The Wilmerding family papers date from 1568 to 1951 (bulk dates: 1860-1900) and span multiple generations of the Wilmerding family, who lived in Livingston County, New York; New York City; and East Islip, Long Island and were of German descent. The papers consist of correspondence, ephemera, invitations, business records, clippings, genealogical research, poetry, wills, and auction catalogs related to the Wilmerding family.

Correspondence comprises the majority of the collection. The correspondence is typically personal in nature, providing details on travels; marriages and family life; purchases; and the social and intellectual activities of Henry Augustus Wilmerding (1802-1870), his wife Harriette E. Kellogg Wilmerding (1823-1901), their son Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding (1848-1922) and Lucius's wife Caroline Murray, and Lucius and Caroline's son Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding II (1880-1949).

Of particular interest may be the correspondence exchanged between Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding and his wife Caroline Murray before they were married (Box 1); letters Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding wrote during his European travels in 1868 and 1869 (Box 1); and the genealogical research (Box 3) which includes documents dating back to 1568. Lucius Kellogg Wilmerding II's extensive personal library is documented by the 1950-1951 auction catalogs contained in the collection. (Box 4)

Some items are in German.

A detailed listing of items included in the collection can be found as an Additional Resource.
"}
