Scope and arrangement
The photographs series contains black and white gelatin prints, contact sheets, color prints, 35mm slides, master and copy negatives, glass slides, color transparencies, and Polaroid snapshots in a variety of sizes. The 8"x10" glossy black and white print is the predominant format in this series.
Included are production stills, cast head shots, rehearsal photos, candid shots of actors applying make-up, prop and set design studies, portraits of Joseph Papp and other NYSF staff members, and both interior and exterior pictures of NYSF venues. There are also photographs depicting special events such as opening nights, benefit performances, and publicity functions.
The majority of the photographs were taken by Martha Swope (production stills), Friedman/Abeles (publicity stills of scenes in full dress), and George Joseph, the NYSF's official photographer (production stills taken at the Delacorte Theatre). Other photographers include Frederic Ohringer, Ken Regan, Gerry Goodstein, Joan Marcus, Carol Rosegg, Eugene Spatz, Herbert Migdoll, and Alix Jeffry.
