Shiffler taught theater, acted in and directed plays at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, and collected stamps with theater subjects. He published a handbook on theater philately in 1969, that he revised, updated and published as Theatre Philatelic in 1994. The collection consists of the 1994 handbook, corrections and additions to it, and two letters to Rod [Roderick] Bladel, actor, librarian and former student of Shiffler's. The handbook has biographical information on actors, directors, playwrights, set designers and others connected to the theater, and information on theaters and festivals from around the world.
