Scope and arrangement
The Florence Tarlow professional files (1949-1985) document her stage career, particularly her Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway work during the 1960s. The collection contains scripts, scores, photographs, programs, and other printed matter.
Scripts are arranged alphabetically by title and date from 1960 to 1983. They are often annotated with stage directions and line edits. Titles include Family Difficulties, Red Cross, Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights, Sightseer, Gorilla Queen, Dracula: Sabbat, Sing Ho for a Bear, Promenade, and Flo and Max. There are also script excerpts and poem-plays, as well as copies of Ruth Krauss's poem "This Breast," which was produced with music by Al Carmine at the Judson Poets' Theater. Scores are for songs from musicals Tarlow performed in, such as Yerma and Inner City.
Programs and announcements document a wide range of Tarlow's stage work, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and summer festival productions. Photographs consist of headshots of Tarlow and production stills from shows such as Family Difficulties, West Was Won, San Francisco's Burning, and Sing Ho for the Bear. The collection also contains two posters: one for Meredith Monk's Specimen Days and one for The Good Woman of Setzuan.
