Scope and arrangement
This collection contains the records of the HB Playwrights Foundation and the personal and professional papers of its founders, Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen. Records relating to the Foundation are primarily production files, but also includes a small amount of administrative files. Material relating to Hagen and Berghof consists of correspondence, appointment books, diaries, photographs and photo albums, production files, scrapbooks, and a small amount of personal material. Production files include scripts, photographs, posters, prompt books, and published works. Sound and video recordings are primarily recordings of productions, but also have music used during performances, sound cues, and recordings of Hagen teaching. Playwrights represented in the records include Donna de Matteo, Horton Foote, Peter Hacks, Peter Handke, Pavel Kohout, Romulus Linney, and William Packard, among others.
This collection contains material similar to that found in the Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof papers, 1889-2004, and in the HB Studio records, 1939-2009, both held in the Billy Rose Theatre Division at this library. Sound recordings primarily consist of recordings of productions, music used during performances, and sound cues. There are also recordings of Hagen teaching. Productions include rehearsals, readings, and performances of The Affairs of Anatol, The Apollo of Bellac, Charlotte, The Game of Love and Death, The Good God of Manhattan, Harrison, Texas, Henry IV (Enrico IV), Holding Hands, The House of Mirth, In a Coffin in Egypt, Krapp's Last Tape, The Love Suicide at Schofield Barracks, The Merchant of Venice, Off-Shore Wind, The Old Flag, The Old Friends, The People from Work, Poor Murderer, Prometheus, Seize the Day, The Silver Fox, Souvenir of Italy, and The White Crow, among others.
Video recordings are of Hagen teaching for A Respect for Acting, one part of her Acting Class, a two-part video of her master classes produced by former students Pennie duPont and Karen Ludwig, and miscellaneous material that includes footage of David Hyde Pierce playing the piano for Hagen.
