Charles Klaveness was a staff editor at The New York Times between 1979 and 2008. The Charles Klaveness collection of style and usage notes contain files of memoranda and marked-up clippings distributed to The Times copy desk staff during Klaveness' tenure at the paper. This collection consists of sixteen letters written by Tom Wolfe to Carol LeVarn McCabe. McCabe was a Sweet Briar student who later worked in publicity and as a writer. Thirteen of the letters were written between 1952 and 1954, while Wolfe was attending graduate school at Yale. The letters discuss Wolfe's social life and ambitions, his writing and his efforts to be published, and his relationship with McCabe. Three letters date to 1969. Block Communities, Inc. (BCI) was a community organizing anti-poverty agency that operated in New York City from 1966 until 1968. Originating in East Harlem, the group consisted of community organizers who moved onto a city block, surveyed the residents, and spearheaded various community development programs. This collection consists of administrative materials, daily and weekly reports by block workers, and publicity materials that include moving images. Karla Jay is a lesbian feminist activist, author, and former professor of English at Pace University (New York). The collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and other items chiefly documenting Jay's work as a professor of English and as author and coeditor of books on the experiences of lesbians and gay men. The bulk of the collection pertains to her work as a writer and academic and includes some documentation of her activities as a pioneer feminist and lesbian activist with the consciousness raising group Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front. The correspondence includes letters from many prominent writers and gay and lesbian rights activists, her literary agent, publishers, contributors to her anthologies, and alternative presses, as well as with academic and professional organizations. The collection also includes typescript drafts of the text of The Gay Report (which she co-authored with Allen Young) and the questionnaires returned by lesbian respondents; drafts of Jay's dissertation and other writings; slides; and audio recordings, chiefly of interviews with Jay or conducted by her from the 1970s to the 1990s. The Maryam Jameelah Papers include the correspondence, fiction, and academic writings of Maryam Jameelah, (nee Margaret Marcus), an American Jew who, after her conversion to Islam, emigrated to Pakistan and resides there still. Her correspondence and writings tell of her troubled youth, her interest in Palestinian life and literature, her sympathy for displaced Palestinians after the formation of modern Israel, her correspondence with Pakistani mentor Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maudoodi, her conversion to Islam, and her subsequent emigration and life in Pakistan. Robert Stone was an award-winning American novelist and screen writer. His works include A Hall of Mirrors, Dog Soldiers, A Flag for Sunrise, Children of Light, and Outerbridge Reach. The Robert Stone papers date from 1950 to 2013, and consist of notes, typescript drafts (on paper and computer disk), galleys, and proof pages for all of Stone's novels; shorter pieces and excerpts from the novels in draft, galley, and published form; reviews and publicity material; and general correspondence. Typescript drafts of Stone's novels comprise the bulk of the papers and reflect his method of composition. Later drafts, galleys, and proofs document the books' progress up to the point of publication. Most of the correspondence are letters received by Stone and document his career as a novelist. less

Under his leadership, the paper acquired an international reputation for objective and trustworthy reporting. The collection contains correspondence, letterpress books, scrapbooks, financial records, blueprints, maps, land surveys, photographs, honorary degrees and awards presented to Ochs, and other material related to his life and career. The main areas of focus in the collection are the Chattanooga Times, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Public Ledger, the Philadelphia Times, Ochs' continuing interest in the city of Chattanooga, and personal and family matters. less
