The New York Public Library purchased Arthur A. Schomburg's collection of books, pamphlets, prints and photographs in 1926 with funds from the Carnegie Corporation and housed at the 135th Street Branch Library of The New York Public Library. L. Hollingsworth Wood was appointed in 1925 by the Board of Trustees of The New York Public Library to purchase and provide guidelines for the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature. Members of the Advisory Committee of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection, in addition to Wood, included Arthur A. Schomburg, Henry G. Leach, New York Public Library, Mrs. Charles S. Brown, Jr., Library trustee; and Eugene Kinckle Jones, Secretary of the National Urban League. Charles S. Johnson, editor of Opportunity magazine, managed the negotiations between the officials of the National Urban League and Mr. Schomburg. The 135th Street Branch Library, under the guidance of Ernestine Rose, the Head Librarian, already had a nucleus of a reference library, the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints that had officially opened on May 8, 1925. The Schomburg Collection became a major part of this reference library. Schomburg Committee of the Trustees of New York Public Library Files consists of correspondence and minutes of meetings of the Schomburg Committee of the Trustees of The New York Public Library. There are also some news clippings relating to the purchase of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature comprised of books, pamphlets, prints, manuscripts and other material. The post 1926 papers include correspondence pertaining to efforts to keep Arthur Schomburg on the library payroll, acquisition of additional material, and Arthur Schomburg's research plans. The New York Public Library first organized classes in 1901 to train staff in its Circulation Department (later renamed the Branch Libraries). From 1911-1926 NYPL also operated a Library School, which prepared staff for Librarian positions, while the Superintendent of Training continued to offer classes for Assistants. For several years after 1926 the Superintendent of Training trained staff in both the Circulation Department and Reference Department. Ferris Lockwood are the principal correspondents. Financial Statements & Budgets include budgets of the Treasurer and reviews of them and income and assets statements by outside accounting firms. The Secretary is a member and officer of the Board and is responsible for the keeping of the records of The New York Public Library Corporation and the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees and all its committees. The 135th Street Branch Records document staff activities as they serviced the information needs of the Harlem community. There are eleven ledgers (1905-1935) containing lists of acquisitions, circulation statistics, library card registrations, and fines. There are also annual Children's Room reports from 1922 to 1950. The Correspondence, 1921-1951, includes a folder of correspondence between Ernestine Rose and Franklin F. Hopper, the Chief of the Circulation Department of the New York Public Library, and a file for Dorothy R. Homer, who became the Branch Librarian following Ernestine Rose's retirement in 1942. less

The Executive Committee, one of the original standing committees of the Board of Trustees, takes general charge of the administration of the affairs of the N.Y.P.L. Corporation. It is empowered to act on behalf of the Board of Trustees in between Board meetings. Records of the Executive Committee consist of handwritten, typewritten and printed documents as well as photographs and architectural drawings. Minutes are records of the meetings of the Executive Committee. To 1949 they are bound in volumes and early volumes include photographs of the Carnegie sites under construction. From 1967 the minutes are typewritten and loose. There are no minutes for the period 1950 to 1966. The Letterbooks consist of three volumes, 1902-1903, 1903-1906, and 1912-1928, of official letters written by the Executive Committee. Many of the letters are signed by John Shaw Billings or Edwin H. Anderson, who as Directors of the Library also served as Secretary to the Executive Committee. The bulk of Letters Received concern library construction and finances. The General Files are arranged alphabetically by subject. They relate to various Library matters but especially the construction of the Carnegie branch libraries and the Central Building, operations of the Circulation and Reference Departments, and finances. Central Building Files relate to the design, construction and maintenance of the Central Building, which were overseen primarily by the Executive Committee. Assorted Records include correspondence regarding the appointment of John Shaw Billings, as well as printed agreements between the City of New York and the Library regarding a pension plan for employees. less

Alanson T. Briggs (1871-1946) served as Agent for Carnegie Sites of The New York Public Library from 1901-1910. He assisted the Board of Trustees in selecting sites for branch libraries, appraised them in conjunction with the Board of Appraisors, and negotiated their purchase for the Carnegie program. During this period he also served as Agent for the Carnegie programs in Queens and Brooklyn. less
