Fanny Broadley was probably born in England, ca. 1820, one of four sisters. She married Henry Burrows (to whom she refers intermittently in her diaries); they had four daughters, Lucy, Constance, Mary Alice, and Dorothy. Travel diaries kept by Fanny Broadley : (MISC 4024) : on a trip from England to Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, with her mother, sisters, and two male companions, May-October 1842. Included are descriptions of their meals and lodgings, the people they encountered, lessons in French and Italian, Fanny's drawing and painting, and her thoughts of Henry Burrows, her special friend in England. The diaries are interspersed with small pen and ink and pencil drawings, and a few dried flower specimens. less

Felicia Dorothea Browne Hemans, British poet. The Felicia Hemans manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: a holograph poem, written when she was eleven, titled "Lines on my Sister's Grotto in Wales"; a two-volume commonplace book kept by Hemans and her sister; and a holograph draft of her poem, "The Graves of a Household." The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1821 and 1830 and discusses publishing matters, family and social arrangements, and the production of her play, Vespers of Palermo. Correspondents include: the writer Maria Jane Jewsbury; the historian Henry Hart Milman; the publisher John Murray; and over twenty others. less

She ran a boarding-school for girls at Blackheath from 1795 to 1806, opened a school in London in 1815, and moved to Margate in 1816, where she also ran a school. Mary Berry, English author. She and her sister Agnes befriended an elderly Horace Walpole in 1788, who took a strong interest in the girls, providing them a home at his Little Strawberry Hill. She edited the posthumous collection of The Works of Horatio Walpole and wrote several books, including A comparative view of the social life of England and France from the Restoration of Charles the Second to the French Revolution (1828). Chiefly remembered for her association with Walpole, recent scholars have shown interest in her letters and journals for the insight they give on women's history.
