The collection includes letters to and from members of the Bournonville family covering the years 1783-1879, written in French, Danish, English and Italian. The major correspondents include: Auguste, Antoine, Jeanne and Mariane Bournonville, Ferdinand Albert, Carlo Blasis, André Isidore Carey, Édouard Carey, Gustave Carey, Jean Coralli, Charles Didelot, Vincenzo Galeotti, Lucile Grahn, Agnes Healey, Christine Healey, Ferdinand Hoppe, Christian Johansson, Augusta Nielsen, Louis-Marie Nivelon, Arthur Saint-Léon, Paul Taglioni, Salvatore Taglioni, and Bernardo Vestris. Over 420 broadsides primarily of dance performances, but also of theater and music presentations at theaters in cities all over the world: Bologna, Boston, Copenhagen, Hanover, London, Milan, Munich, New York City, Panama City, Paris, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, and others. Theaters include London's Adelphi Theatre, Covent Garden Theatre and the Drury Lane Theatre; the Royal Theatre of Copenhagen (Kongelige Teater), and Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Among the many performers and choreographers represented are Maria Bonfanti, August Bournonville, Agnes de Mille, Fanny Elssler, Jenny Lind, Giuseppina Morlacchi, Serge Oukrainsky, Andreas Pavley, Anna Pavlova, Rita Sangalli, and Marie Taglioni. Charles Weidman (1901-1975) was a modern dancer, choreographer, and educator. He founded several dance companies and was seminal to the modern dance movement in the United States. He continued to teach and perform until he died in New York City in 1975. The collection dates from the late 1800s, but the bulk of materials are from the 1940s to 1975. The collection contains photographs of Weidman's performances, primarily in the Expression of Two Arts Theatre, and papers related to his close collaborator, artist Mikhail Santaro. less

The Cia Fornaroli and Walter Toscanini Papers document the careers of a wife and husband, both in the field of dance. Fornaroli was a prima ballerina, choreographer, teacher and director, and Walter Toscanini was a dance historian, collector and curator, primarily in Milan and New York. The majority of this collection is in Italian. The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, photographs, scores, research files, scrapbooks, and writings. less

The Lillian Moore Dance Research Files represents the efforts of Lillian Moore to document thoroughly the history of dance in the United States and Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Much, but not all, of her findings have been published in the numerous articles and books that Ms. Moore wrote. The contents of the folders within this collection include holograph and typescript notes; chronologies of dancers' lives and dance works and/or performances; legal documents verifying births, deaths, and whereabouts of dancers at particular times; research correspondence with librarians, scholars, and descendants of dancers; photographs; photostats; and some holograph and typescript copies of articles written by Lillian Moore. less

Dance Perspectiveswas published quarterly from 1959-1976, a total of 66 issues plus a 1962 Annual which was a bonus for subscribers. Selma Jeanne Cohen's records of Dance Perspectivescover this period, but there is no material for issues #1, #2, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #15, #20, #23, #25, and #29. The amount of material on each issue varies considerably; there is only one letter pertaining to issue #3. less

The Dr. Ingrid Brainard Papers contain documents from the 1890s to 2000, and cover the academic and professional career of the distinguished dance historian and author. It contains letters, writings, research and conference materials, and teaching materials, as well as personal papers relating to Brainard, her career, and education. less

Walter Terry was a dance critic for the New York Herald Tribune, the New York World Journal, and the Saturday Review. He also contributed a number of articles to other publications and he wrote several books on the subject of dance. Not only a writer, Terry was a juror for many dance competitions and he was speaker at many universities and public functions. The collection contains correspondence, artwork, personal and professional written material, photographs, ephemera, and oversized material. less

Jerome Robbins’ collection of graphic works includes over 200 drawings and paintings by Robbins himself, from the early 1930s through at least 1990. Figure drawings and portrait sketches dominate Robbins artwork, but he also drew and painted landscapes, still lifes, abstracts, and costume and set designs. less
