Scope and arrangement
The Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing Photographs document the career and personal lives of Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing. Tudor and Laing worked together and separately in the dance world for decades. The collection contains a significant number of professional photographs of dance works related to the two men as dancers and to Tudor's work as choreographer, including Day Before Spring, Dark Elegies, Dim Lustre, Gala Performance, Jardin aux Lilas/Lilac Garden, Pillar of Fire, and Undertow. The collection includes professional and non-professional photographs of each of the men onstage, backstage, and outside the dance world, including personal photographs of Hugh Laing and Diana Adams taken on vacation and on tour. In addition, there are several professional and amateur photographs of dancers, friends, and colleagues of Tudor and Laing.
The collection contains a number of slides which chiefly relate to trips to Barbados in and around 1959. One group of slides, however, appears to document the costumes of the 1948 ballet Shadow of the Wind.
Most of the collection's negatives remain in their original glassine wrappers and have been listed alphabetically. One group of negatives has been rehoused; it correlates to contact sheets within the collection depicting artworks, people and horses.
The Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing photographs are arranged in four series:
-
This series contains photographic prints from the collection. Prints primarily exist as 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 sizes. Larger images may be found in Series IV: Oversized.
-
1948, 1959
While a small group of color slides document costumes for what appears to be the 1948 production of "Shadow of the Wind," this series chiefly contains slides taken on tour or vacations. Several contain images of Tudor, Laing, and Adams. Many were taken in Barbados around 1959.
