The collection consists of three scrapbooks containing drawings, photographs, and expressions of appreciation by children who had been invited by Joyce Dinkins to participate in the "Reading is Recreation" program.

Joyce Dinkins, wife of New York City's first African-American mayor, David Dinkins, founded the "Reading is Recreation" program (1991), a citywide literacy program for school children. The collection consists of three scrapbooks containing drawings, photographs, and expressions of appreciation.
Joyce Dinkins, wife of New York City's first African-American mayor, David Dinkins, founded the "Reading is Recreation" program (1991), a citywide literacy program for school children. The program included visits by first grade classes to Gracie Mansion and visits to schools by Mrs. Dinkins. At the Mansion, authors, illustrators, and celebrities shared their favorite children's books with the students.
