Diary kept by an unidentified person on a journey from New York to South Amboy, N.J. by boat, proceeding by train to Bordenton, by boat to Philadelphia; by rail to Columbia, P.A.; canal to Hollidaysburg; train to Johnstown and canal to Pittsburgh; by boat to St. Louis via Wheeling, Cincinnati, and Louisville; then by riverboat on the Mississippi River to Dubuque, Wisconsin Territory. Describes seeing Indians and visiting Fort Armstrong at Rock Island en route; mentions Henry Dodge, Governor of the Wisconsin Territory, as a fellow passenger; attendance at a dinner in honor of Dodge in Dubuque; visit to Julian Dubuque's grave; and seeing the laying of the cornerstone for first Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Territory.
