The collection consists of autograph correspondence and documents written by American poet and author Walt Whitman, 1867-1888 and undated, and a mounted photograph portrait by George C. Cox, signed and dated by Whitman, 1887 September. Correspondence consists of two autograph letters or notes to the New York Daily Tribune, concerning his subscription, 1880, and enclosing a letter for the Summer Leisure column (not present), 1881; two undated notes likely addressed to the Tribune, requesting papers and publications, and an undated autograph postcard to John Burroughs regarding his health. Also present are an autograph invoice to French & Richardson for copies of Leaves of Grass, 1867 August 13; a printed page sent as a correct sample of “O Captain! My Captain!," with Whitman’s signed autograph suggestion to the printer, stamped Riverside Press, 1888 Feb 11; and identifying notes on cardboard "for Sequella for future edition of Specimen Days…," undated.
