Diary of Mrs. Susan Speed (née Mosby), great-grandmother of actress Beverly Sitgreaves, maintained in Virginia from 1861-1865. Entries primarily describe her sorrow at the death and destruction caused by the Civil War, along with her hopes for her country; the enlistment of her husband, John H. Speed - and, eventually, her son, John M. Speed - along with other friends and neighbors. Also prevalent are reflections on her Christian faith and sermons heard; notes on daily activities; and reports of births, deaths, illnesses, and marriages
