M. A. Hookham, née Starling, friend and correspondent of Mary Hays. Before turning twenty-one she married a Mr. Hookham, some time between April and October of 1820. It is possible that she is Mary Ann Hookham, author of The Life and times of Margaret of Anjou, queen of England and France (1872). · To Mary Hays, writer : 3 letters : -- 1 autograph letter signed "M. Starling" : 1 Dec 1819 : (MISC 2199) : from Brewer Street; discussing the works of Mary Wollstonecraft; begins, "Allow me to assure you it is withno small pleasure that I accept your kind offer of correspondence ..." -- 1 autograph letter signed "M. A. Starling" : 24 Apr 1820 : (MISC 2200) : from Marlborough Square; begins, "Being well acquainted with my Mother's reluctance to letter writing ..." -- 1 autograph letter signed "M. A. Hookham" : 6 Oct 1820 : (MISC 2205) : from Marlborough Square; begins, "I fear, my dear Madam, you will attribute to neglect and want of friendship my silence on the part of my Mother and myself ...".
