William Byron, 5th Baron Byron, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. In 1765 he killed his cousin and neighbor, William Chaworth, in a duel. He was tried for murder, but found guilty only of manslaughter and forced to pay a small fine. He enjoyed the fact that the incident (and others similarly perceived as displays of cruelty) earned him the nickname "the Wicked Lord." He was the great-uncle to Lord Byron, the poet. To "Daws" : 2 letters : -- 1 autograph letter signed : 25 Jan 1782 : (B'ANA 0537) : regarding payments of interest. -- 1 autograph letter signed : [no date] : (B'ANA 0684) : begins, "I have enclosed to you a rect. ..." Mounted opposite p. 6 in v. I of the grangerized copy of Nichol's Byron.
