Harry Nelson Gay (1870-1932) was an American author and scholar who lived in Italy from 1898 until his death. His personal library was renowned for the collection of resources on the history of Italy from 1815 to 1870. He wrote works on the Risorgimento and biographies for Americani Illustri. Collection consists of Gay's letters to William Roscoe Thayer, an American historian and biographer. Letters, 1907-1923, were written chiefly in Italy and concern Gay's opinions of other historians and scholars; his writings and search for publications for his library; current events in Italy; the diplomatic scene in Europe; World War I from the Italian viewpoint; founding of the Library for American Studies in Italy; affairs of the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association; and relief work in earthquakes and on war fronts. less

Baron Edward de Lebzeltern-Collenbach was a member of the aristocratic Lebzeltern family of the Austrian Empire. His father, Francis, and uncle Louis were associates of Prince Metternich. Edward entered the diplomatic service in 1835 in London and then was transferred in 1844 to the Austrian legation in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was assigned to the Italian states of Parma and Modena in 1854 and then went to Lisbon in 1857. His daughter Marie married into the Portuguese aristocracy and his son Victor settled in the U.S. Collection contains correspondence, biographical essay, autograph album, and printed matter by and about members of the Lebzeltern family. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters, 1834-1863, written by Edward to his father, providing an almost daily account of his activities while he was in London, St. Petersburg, Lisbon, and other European cities. James Leander Cathcart (1767-1843) was a seaman, American consul to the Barbary States, and civil servant. He served as a sailor during the American Revolution, was captured first by the British, then by Algerian pirates in 1785 and was sold into slavery in Algeria. After his release from eleven years in captivity, he returned to the Barbary States as consul from the U.S. After his diplomatic service he worked as a clerk in the U.S. Treasury. His oldest son, Charles W. Cathcart (1800-1888) settled in Indiana in 1830 and became a farmer, land speculator and politically active Democrat. He served two terms in the House of Representatives and was appointed to the U.S. Senate. Collection consists of correspondence of James Leander Cathcart and other family members, genealogical notes and printed matter. Correspondence includes Cathcart's letters while a prisoner of and later emissary to the Barbary States, 1785-1806, and letters to his sons after their moves to the Michigan and Indiana Territories, 1827-1844. Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Some financial records are included with the correspondence. Her notes and diaries, 1907-1935, are largely social in nature. Writings include annotated typescripts and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works.
