Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Papers include general correspondence, 1945-1979; New York Times editorial correspondence, 1970-1976; and correspondence concerning Authors' Guild, 1957-1979, Authors' League, 1962-1973, and Times Op-Ed page. Also, typescripts, notes, clippings, and other materials for his articles, reviews, biographies, novels, scripts, and other writings; and files, 1983-1988, collected by Mitgang for his book Dangerous Dossiers. Other items consist of photographs, notebooks, awards, teaching notes, clippings, Stars and Stripes scrapbook, cartoons, and memorabilia. Materials relating to his documentaries include scripts and notes, films, videotapes and audio recordings of programs produced for CBS News; these include documentaries on Carl Sandburg, Henry Moore, and Jimmy Walker, and interviews with David Ben-Gurion, Anthony Eden, Admiral Gene R. La Roque and Helen Wolff. less

The collection consists of miscellaneous corporate records of Bowne & Co., Inc., and papers relating to the Bowne family of Flushing, Long Island, N. Y., including original letters by Robert Bowne and other members of the Bowne and related families. The collection was assembled by Edmund A. Stanley, Jr. (1924 - ) a former president and chairman of Bowne & Co., Inc. during the course of his research for his books on the history of the firm. less

Citizens for a Quieter City was a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of urban noise. Founded by Robert Alex Baron, its objectives were to develop information about the injurious effect of noise; research methods of controlling and reducing it; and educate the public on the importance of its abatement. The Citizens for a Quieter City records (1950-1980) document the work of the organization through correspondence with government and private sector officials; sound and video recordings; meeting minutes; records of noise complaints; scrapbooks; financial records; posters; and published research and information on noise pollution. The collection also holds the records of the Upper Sixth Avenue Noise Abatement Association and Robert Alex Baron's files regarding his job as general manager of Theatre Tours. less

Otto Harbach (1873-1963) was an author, librettist and lyricist, best known for songs such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Love Nest," "Indian Love Call," and "The Night Was Made For Love;"; and for musicals and plays such as No, No, Nanette; Roberta; The Firefly; and The Cat and the Fiddle. These additions to the Otto Harbach papers, dating from 1923 to 1979, are comprised of an oral history, writings, scores, scripts, lyrics, photographs, a scrapbook, home movies, and other sound and moving image recordings. less

Jean Stein (1934-2017) was an American author, oral historian, editor, and philanthropist. She worked as an editor at The Paris Review, under George Plimpton, and co-edited the literary and visual arts magazine Grand Street with Walter Hopps. She was married to William vanden Heuvel and Torsten Wiesel. The Jean Stein papers (1916-2016) document Stein's career and life. The works most extensively represented are Stein's oral history biography of the American actress and Andy Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, Edie: An American Biography, (1982); and the oral history West of Eden: An American Place, which focused on five families and individuals Stein considered essential to the history of Los Angeles. Personal files, which include letters Stein received from novelist William Faulkner, document Stein's childhood of wealth and privilege as a the daughter of talent agent and MCA founder, Jules Stein; and her adult life as a member of New York's intellectual elite. less

Adolph Simon Ochs was an American newspaperman and the publisher of the New York Times for almost forty years, from 1896 to 1935. Under his leadership, the paper acquired an international reputation for objective and trustworthy reporting. The collection contains correspondence, letterpress books, scrapbooks, financial records, blueprints, maps, land surveys, photographs, honorary degrees and awards presented to Ochs, and other material related to his life and career. The main areas of focus in the collection are the Chattanooga Times, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Public Ledger, the Philadelphia Times, Ochs' continuing interest in the city of Chattanooga, and personal and family matters. less

Stanley Applebaum (1922-2019) was an arranger and composer who was highly active in the New York City popular and commercial music industry from the 1940s to the early 2000s. Among his clients were Skitch Henderson, the New York Pops, Ben E. King, Neil Sedaka, and the Broadway musical Raggedy Ann. Applebaum papers, which date from 1940 to 2007, are comprised primarily of scores for his arrangements, orchestrations, compositions, and commercial advertising; and sound recordings of his music for radio and television advertising. Business letters and contracts are also present. less

This collection consists of press kits and pressbooks or campaign books for films starring Black actors and actresses; in many cases, these films were directed, produced, and/or written by African Americans as well. The press kits contain sets of promotional materials for distribution to members of the media. Pressbooks, or campaign books, are mostly multi-page brochures of advertising "accessories" (such as posters, lobby cards, and film stills) for movie theaters. Most of the films are fictional, but there are some documentaries; also, there are a few television films included. less
