James Schoolcraft Sherman (1855-1912), lawyer, banker and vice-president of the United States, began his political career as mayor of Utica, N.Y. in 1884. In 1886 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served until 1908 excepting 1891 to 1893. He was chairman of the Republican state conventions in 1895, 1900 and 1908, and chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1906. In 1908 he was elected as William Howard Taft's vice-president. Four years later he was renominated but died before the election. Collection consists of correspondence, financial documents, writings, scrapbooks, and other materials that document Sherman's political career. General correspondence, 1883-1912, constitutes the bulk of the papers and covers official, semi-official, business, and personal matters. Subjects include the campaign and election for the vice-presidency; Sherman's candidacy for Speaker of the House of Representatives, 1899; his control of patronage and party machinery; his defeat by Theodore Roosevelt for chairmanship of the New York Republican Convention in 1910; the Progressive Party; legislation enacted during the Roosevelt and Taft administrations, especially the Payne-Aldrich Tariff of 1909; the Republican Party; the Utica Trust and Depository Company of which he was president; veterans' claims; request for support to pass or defeat bills; and endorsements for appointments. Correspondents were members of Congress, department heads in Washington, members of the Roosevelt and Taft cabinets, constituents, and business and personal associates. Walter Del Mar (1862-1944) was a banker, broker, journalist, and author. After establishing a banking firm in London which represented American interests, he returned to the United States in 1914 and wrote books on his extensive travels. Collection contains correspondence, memoranda, business agreements, writings, and photograph albums compiled by Del Mar. General correspondence, 1900-1944, consists mainly of letters from The New York Public Library regarding Del Mar's gifts and requests. Business papers, 1882-1901, include correspondence, memoranda, agreements relating to his company and various other business interests; and papers, 1896-1901, concerning color photography and multi-color printing. Writings series contains notes, diaries, address books, and typescripts including annotated version of Around the World Through Japan (1903). Also, photographs of Del Mar's travels. less

Phelps, Dodge & Co. was founded by Anson G. Phelps in 1834 as the successor to the firm of Phelps and Peck of New York City, the leading importer of metals in the U.S. The company imported metals, mainly tin, from Great Britain and distributed them throughout the U.S., and exported cotton to England. In addition to the metal trade, Phelps & Dodge invested in the lumber industry, brass, copper and iron manufacturing, iron mining, railroads, real estate, and banking. In 1883 the firm purchased copper mines in Arizona and was transformed into one of the nation's foremost mining companies, dealing in the mining, smelting, refining, and manufacturing of copper. In 1917 the assets of the firm were acquired by Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the name was changed to Phelps Dodge Corporation. Collection consists of incoming correspondence, financial and legal documents of Phelps and Peck, 1818-1834, and its successor Phelps, Dodge & Co., 1834-1869. Letters are from commission agents, customers, suppliers, and those concerned with the firm's manufacturing, lumber, real estate, railroad, and banking interests. In addition, there are letters from Daniel James of Phelps, James & Co., the firm's branch in Liverpool, England, discussing the British side of the business; letters pertaining to the estate of Anson G. Phelps; and some family correspondence. Financial and legal records include accounts of sales of Phelps, Dodge & Co. goods, invoices, receipts, 1818-1865; copies of partnership agreements, 1834-1882; the will of Anson G. Phelps; and account books, bank books and memoranda books, 1831-1864. less
