Personal correspondence between Watson and friends and authors; business correspondence and records; and audio and videocassette recordings of readings at the bookstore and records documenting the events held there and the relationships between the owner, the authors, and clientele. Of note are letters and clippings pertaining to the closing of the store and the audiocassettes of various readings. Shirley Carter Burden (1908-1989), a descendant of Cornelius Vanderbilt, was a prominent American photographer, best known for his pictorial essays exploring aspects of Catholic culture, racial intolerance, and architectural heritage. Burden promoted the appreciation of photography through service on the boards and advisory committees of several museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, and was a long-time supporter and chairman of the board of Aperture. Colleagues and friends included, among others, Edward Steichen, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Minor White, and Thomas Merton. The collection reflects Shirley Carter Burden's post-World War II career as a commercial architectural photographer and fine art photographer, particularly his publications and exhibitions. Correspondence, negative indexes, reviews, contracts, gift lists, proof copies and reference materials document the publication of Behold thy Mother, The Chairs, God Is My Life, I Wonder Why, Presence and The Vanderbilts in My Life, and projects concerning Ellis Island. Exhibitions of Burden's work and other projects are documented in correspondence, royalty and shipping receipts, exhibition floor plans, publicity material, invitations to openings, reviews, and a guest book. The collection also contains miscellaneous correspondence; business records; records of his private collection; and subject files on other photographers, particularly Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams. Also present is a phonograph recording of Burden's 1965 interview on "Open End" about Behold thy Mother. Some of Burden's photographs are scattered throughout the collection. less

The Contemporaries gallery, established in New York City in 1952 by Margaret Lowengrund, its Director, represented American graphic artists and promoted the art of printmaking, especially lithography. Margaret Lowengrund (1902-1957) was an American lithographer and printmaker who was also active as a painter, illustrator, critic and writer. Her work was exhibited at the Kleemann-Thorman Galleries, the Philadelphia Print Club, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and elsewhere. Lowengrund taught color lithography at the New School for Social Research, and operated printmaking workshops offering classes taught by artists such as Michael Ponce de Leon and John Muench. In 1955 she opened The Contemporaries Graphic Art Centre, which later became the Pratt Graphics Center. Lowengrund was an associate editor of Art Digest, and assistant director of the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts, 1950-1951. The records of The Contemporaries gallery consist of a visitors' register for exhibition attendees from 1951 December-1955 March; one folder of Margaret Lowengrund's correspondence, almost entirely incoming, from museums and institutions regarding the gallery's activities, artists seeking representation, and potential art buyers, 1954-1957; photographs of the gallery and Margaret Lowengrund; a typescript of Lowengrund's article "The Year in Art, 1949" for World Scope Encylopedia; and a few clippings. less

The Typophiles is a not-for-profit educational association that encourages the appreciation and production of fine typography and bookmaking through lectures, meetings, and the production of fine examples of the printing arts. The collection, dating from 1908 to 2011, consists of the papers of Dr. Robert L. Leslie and the records he generated as a member and officer of the Typophiles. Included are Dr. Leslie's personal and professional papers, as well as records from his businesses, The Composing Room, the Gallery 303, and the Heritage of the Graphic Arts lecture series. The records reflect the book arts during what may be considered the golden age of fine printing. Significant individuals represented in the collection include Frederick W. Goudy, Warren Chappell, Bruce Rogers, Paul A. Bennett, Beatrice Warde, David Godine, Raymond Gid, Fernand Baudin, Roderick Stinehour, W.A. Dwiggins, Giovanni Mardersteig, and Hermann Zapf. less
