The Bloch Publishing Company has been a family-owned book publishing company for four generations. In 1854 Edward Bloch (1829-1906) established the company. His son Charles E. Bloch (1861-1940) succeeded him and headed the business for sixty years. His son Edward H. Bloch (1898-1982) subsequently managed the company for forty years. As of 1999, the firm is under management of Edward H. Bloch's son, Charles Bloch. This company specializes in publications in the fields of Judaica and Hebraica. The records are in English and Hebrew and consists mainly of book reviews, some correspondence and publicity material from the 1950s and 1960s. There is a scrapbook (ca.1920) including photographs compiled by Charles Bloch Sr. about rabbis and prominent members of the Jewish community. The British Apprentice Club (BAC) was founded in 1921 by two American women, M. Moyca Newell and Katherine Mayo. The purpose of the club was to provide hospitality for cadets from the British merchant navy while their ships were berthed in the ports of New York City. While in service with the YMCA in Great Britain during World War I, Newell and Mayo were impressed by the hospitality extended towards American servicemen. Upon their return to the United States, Newell and Mayo founded the British Apprentice Club at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. Lucile Brisbane Spaulding acted as the BAC manager and social director for thirty years. In 1923, the BAC was incorporated as a memorial to Walter H. Page who served as a ambassador of the United States to the court of St. James in London from 1913 to 1918. Attendance fell during the 1950s and the Club ceased operations in 1961. Records contain administrative files, letters, logbooks, registers, and photographs of sailors documenting the Club's hospitality to British merchant sailors on shore leave in New York City. less

Jeff Kisseloff (1955 - ) is an American writer and oral historian. This collection (1986-2000) contains sound recordings of interviews Kisseloff conducted for his published and unpublished books and articles. Two books were published from these interviews: You Must Remember This: An oral history of Manhattan from the 1890s to World War II and Generation on Fire: Voices of protest from the 1960s. The interviews for a book on the integration of baseball and a book on early rock and roll were never published. less

Herbert Jacob Seligmann (1891-1984), writer and civil rights activist, published books and articles on civil rights, World War II, artists, and related topics. Papers document the career and personal life of Herbert J. Seligmann through letters, writings and printed and visual materials. A prolific writer, he published books and and contributed to many newspapers and magazines. His works include studies of the civil rights of African-Americans and the rise of Nazism during World War II, reviews of fine art books, and articles about artists such as Vincent A. Hartgen, John Marin and Georgia O'Keeffe. Clippings of his articles are contained in the scrapbooks, 1920-1946. Visual materials consist of photographs, slides and negative roll films of Seligmann's trips through the United States and Europe. Photographs of Europe include pictures of Jews in the Netherlands, Poland and Romania. These pictures were taken by Seligmann when he traveled to Europe after World War I as publicity director for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Photograph album contains pictures of Haiti during the 1920's, the Adirondacks and western United States. less
