The Mercantile Collection, 1726-1950, is a synthetic collection documenting mercantile and other business activities from the early-17th to the mid-20th centuries, especially in the northeastern United States. It consists of papers and records created by persons, firms, and companies engaged chiefly in trade, finance, insurance, mining, railroad management, shipping, and whaling. A few items pertain to manufacturing and real estate. Transatlantic commerce in the colonial and early-national period, and the early railroad industry in America, are strongly represented. Notable material includes the assorted papers of New York City and Philadelphia merchants, among them members of the Pemberton family of Philadelphia; Vice-Admiralty court proceedings; and the incomplete ledger of an 18th-century New York City druggist. less

Bion J. Arnold (1861-1942) was an engineer who advised Chicago and other cities on the development of their electric transit systems. He devised the plan for the electrification of Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Collection consists of mainly engineering papers with some personal papers of Arnold. less

Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less

George A. Harwood was the chief engineer for the New York City and Hudson River Railroad Company during the construction and electrification of Grand Central Terminal between 1903 and 1913. His collection of material related to Grand Central Terminal consists of reports and photographs documenting the background and construction of the terminal and its electrification dating from 1906 to 1914. Also included are maps and plans created by the West Side Improvement Engineering Committee in May 1927, for the project which later became the High Line. less
