Renowned Russian translator and Soviet culture lecturer Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood (1894-1974) is best known as the English translator for Konstantin Stanislavsky, the actor, director, and dramatics coach for the Moscow Art Theatre. The collection consists of correspondence in English, Russian, French, Italian and German; articles; photographs; and scrapbooks. There is a document in the collection that predates Mrs. Hapgood's birthdate. The collection contains voluminous correspondence from Konstantin Stanislavsky's associates and family, although there is no correspondence from Stanislavsky himself. less

The collection documents both the long-time correspondence between James Belden and Lillian Gish and his admiration for her which is illustrated in his documentation of her career. The correspondence spans the years 1936 to 1991 and contains many of Gish's opinions and insights into the world of the theater and her tastes in literature. The clippings and articles document primarily her earlier career, becoming sketchy during Ms. Gish's middle age. less

Dorothy Hanson was a fan of the actress Lillian Gish, who corresponded with her for many years and kept scrapbooks devoted to Miss Gish's career. Consists of letters and cards written by Lillian Gish to her friend Dorothy Hanson between 1956 and 1982, two news clippings, a photograph of Lillian Gish and her sister Dorothy which was autographed by Dorothy, and a program from a Dartmouth Film Society tribute to Lillian Gish. Although one of her notes speaks of attending the premiere of her 1978 film for Robert Altman, A WEDDING, Lillian Gish's notes to her friend Dorothy Hanson are generally brief and include little or no information related to her career. less

The Lucy Kroll correspondence from Lillian Gish consists of 62 letters written by Lillian Gish to her agent, Lucy Kroll. The correspondence spans the 1960's through the 1980's and contains information on Lillian Gish's career and personal life. There is also much information on Dororthy Gish, especially concerning her failing health. Of special note is the correspondence regarding Lillian Gish's work on the motion picture THE COMEDIANS, directed by Peter Glenville. less

Also includes a script entitled THE RAINBOW YEARS, dated January 30, 1958, for a performance marking the twentieth anniversary of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, i.e. the "March of Dimes." The script features material written for celebrity performers such as Lillian Gish, Eddie Cantor, Don Ameche, and Rudy Vallée. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less

Donehue was a director working primarily for the New York stage and television in the 1950s and 1960s. He also directed two films in Hollywood. The collection includes personal correspondence; production files containing notes, letters, partial scripts, cast lists, contracts and financial papers; complete scripts, many for television shows; clippings of reviews; and a few manuscripts and photographs. less

The collection is incomplete in that it contains only correspondence from his later years and photographs and scrapbooks from his early career.
