Hudson Maxim (1853-1927) was an American inventor, mechanical engineer and explosives expert. He worked as a consultant for the Du Pont Company from 1897 to 1927 and wrote books on explosives and literary and political matters. Collection consists of correspondence; typescripts of speeches, books and articles; patent materials; legal documents; family papers; photographs; and printed matter. Papers document Maxim's career as an inventor and explosives expert; experiments with soybeans and other foods; anti-Prohibition activities; involvement with Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, local affairs; and family and personal life. Bulk of correspondence dates from last few years of Maxim's life, 1925-1927, and concerns his personal and professional activities. Also, speeches delivered by Maxim, 1907-1927; notes, reports, correspondence, blueprint maps, and charts relating to explosion sites and damage; legal documents, ca. 1911-1925; correspondence with canning companies, seed merchants, and state and federal agriculture departments, 1917-1918, concerning his experiments with the preparation and canning of various foods, particularly soybeans; drafts of an autobiography and other writings, ca. 1880s-1920s; and anti-Prohibition speeches, articles and letters to newspaper editors, with related clippings and printed materials, 1920s. The collection documents both the long-time correspondence between James Belden and Lillian Gish and his admiration for her which is illustrated in his documentation of her career. The correspondence spans the years 1936 to 1991 and contains many of Gish's opinions and insights into the world of the theater and her tastes in literature. The clippings and articles document primarily her earlier career, becoming sketchy during Ms. Gish's middle age. less

Renowned Russian translator and Soviet culture lecturer Elizabeth Reynolds Hapgood (1894-1974) is best known as the English translator for Konstantin Stanislavsky, the actor, director, and dramatics coach for the Moscow Art Theatre. The collection consists of correspondence in English, Russian, French, Italian and German; articles; photographs; and scrapbooks. There is a document in the collection that predates Mrs. Hapgood's birthdate. The collection contains voluminous correspondence from Konstantin Stanislavsky's associates and family, although there is no correspondence from Stanislavsky himself. less

Actor Richard Barthelmess formed Inspiration Pictures to make Tol'able David (1921). He founded the Inspiration Company along with Charles H. Duell and Henry King. Inspiration Pictures was located in Los Angeles, California. Collection consists of 96 albums of black and white photographs and press books of clippings for films produced by Inspiration Pictures in the 1920s. The amateur gentleman (ca. 1926), The bond boy (ca. 1922), The bright shawl (ca. 1923), Fury (ca. 1923), Ranson's folly (ca. 1926), Romola (1924), and The white sister (1923) are especially well-documented. There is also one press book of material on actress Lillian Gish, who appeared in The white sister (1923) and Romola (1924), produced by Inspiration Pictures. less

Each half-hour episode of the program presented the highlights of one musical. Gordon MacRae was the host and leading man for each episode; his leading ladies came from radio and the Metropolitan Opera. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less
