The Actors Company Theatre (TACT) was an Off-Broadway theatre company. Founded by a group of stage veterans, TACT focused on the production of lesser-known and underperformed plays of literary merit. The collection consists of production and dramaturgy files, financial records, photographs and office files. Materials are related to the operation of TACT, including business and financial documents, and its various productions and events.  less

In his early years, Julius Kahn was an actor who toured the country with Joseph Jefferson's troupe, as well as others. Later, Kahn became a lawyer, and represented California for more than twenty years in the House of Representatives as Republican Congressman. After Kahn died in office in December 1924, his wife Florence ran for his seat and won, becoming the first Jewish woman to serve as a Representative. Consists of two letters concerning theater matters written by 27 year-old actor Julius Kahn to his lodge brother MacKay, whose full name is not known. Kahn writes of his association with actor/manager Joseph Jefferson, and tells anecdotes of Jefferson's generosity and kindness, which he contrasts with other managers under whom he has worked. less

Morton DaCosta (born Tecosky), stage and film director and actor, was born 7 March 1914 in Philadelphia. A graduate of Temple University, Mr. DaCosta began his career as an actor and director in regional theatre in 1937. He made his acting debut on Broadway in 1942 in THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH and his New York directing debut in 1949 with a revival of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER. Among his many productions are PLAIN AND FANCY (1955), NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS (1955), AUNTIE MAME (1956) with which he made his film directing debut in 1958, and THE MUSIC MAN (1957). Mr. DaCosta died in 1989. The Morton DaCosta Papers consist of scripts and promptbooks, production materials, correspondence and personal papers documenting his life and career as a director and actor of stage and film. The papers span the years 1929 to 1978 and include such productions as THE MUSIC MAN, SARATOGA, NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS and AUNTIE MAME, among others. less

George Heister was involved in the theater in America throughout much of the 19 century, and worked with many of its prominent figures. Consists of six letters written to George Heister by several professionals of the theatrical world, including producer/playwright Augustin Daly, playwright Charles Fechter, E. F. Keach of the Boston Museum, and actor Junius Brutus Booth, Jr. Also includes an invitation to the American Dramatic Fund Association dated 1866, and an expression of appreciation from the Providence Theatre Building Committee dated 1838. less
