Varian Fry, born in New York City in 1907, was known as "the American Schindler" for his work in aiding over 2,000 endangered people from Nazi-occupied France until he was ousted by the Vichy government in 1941. In the final years of his life, Fry took on the role of family genealogist, collecting correspondence and other material belonging to members of his extended family, and researching his family's origins. Belknap, Center, Innes, and Murphy were notable names in New England as early as the 17th century. Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. Adelaide Milton de Groot (1876-1967) was the daughter of William de Groot, a ship owner employed in the China trade and his second wife Elizabeth King Hawley. A painter, art collector and philanthropist, Miss de Groot was born in New York City and moved with her family to Nice, France in 1891. She lived in Europe for forty years before returning to New York in 1933. Her New York cousins included yachtsman, composer and photographer Frank Seymour Hastings and his brother the noted architect Thomas Hastings, who were the sons of Reverend Thomas Samuel Hastings and Fanny de Groot. Adelaide de Groot's sister Elizabeth married an Italian diplomat, Guilio Caravadossi, the Count of Aspremonte. After de Groot's return to New York, she pursued an interest in her family's genealogy. The papers contain the research of Adelaide Milton de Groot - including her notes, family charts, and correspondence. Adelaide Milton de Groot researched the de Groot family and the families related to her by marriage, namely the Bosworth, Brantingham, Foote, Hastings, Hawley and Robinson families. The collection consists primarily of handwritten genealogical notes and charts.
