Child actress, best known for playing the title roles in the original LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY (1888-1889) and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, Elsie Leslie returned to the stage as a young adult to star in THE RIVALS (1898) and other plays. Born Elsie Leslie Lyde, she was married twice: in 1901 to actor Jefferson Winter, and in 1918 to banker Edwin J. Milliken. The collection contains letters to Elsie Leslie from friends and admirers, publicity photographs of Leslie as a child and an adult actress, and her autograph album containing letters, photographs, clippings, autographs and cards. Most of the letters concern personal matters: invitations, travels and health, though there is some discussion of possible roles and compliments on her performances. There is an extensive file of letters from playwright Louis N. Parker. Other correspondents include Poultney Bigelow, members of the Samuel Clemens family, Julie Harris, Helen Keller, Julia Marlowe, Schuyler Mathews, and Alexander Woollcott. There is a small amount of third party correspondence, primarily letters to her second husband, Edwin Milliken. less

Sarah Epstein graduated from high school in 1936, and gathered the bulk of these autographs in the three years which followed. Three hardbound autograph albums, each measuring 15 x 10.5 cm., each bearing the word AUTOGRAPHS embossed on its cover. Albums contain mostly the autographs of actors, and also a small number of jazz musicians and singers, as well as schoolmates and family members of Sarah Epstein. Most of the actors whose autographs appear were movie performers, including Joan Crawford, James Cagney, Henry Fonda, Bob Hope, Gary Cooper, Judy Garland, Errol Flynn, and others, but several were known primarily as stage performers, including Katharine Cornell and George M. Cohan. Musicians whose autographs appear include Kay Kyser, Bunny Berrigan and Rudy Vallee. less

This summer theater was founded in 1933. In the 1956 and 1957 seasons reflected here, the theater was run by Donald Wolin and Harold L. Schiff. The guest book, arranged by production, is signed by the actors and staff and includes addresses and comments, in many instances. Tony Pastor was a central figure in the establishment and development of vaudeville in America. Nicknamed "The Dean of Vaudeville," Tony Pastor was a former actor who opened his first variety theater in New York in 1865, and his second in 1881. He was known for influencing vaudeville performers towards using more family-friendly material, thus broadening the popularity of the form. Hardbound autograph album, measuring 18 x 17 cm., with the word AUTOGRAPHS embossed on its cover. Flyleaf inscription reads "Tony Pastor, New York, Nov 21st 1886." Contains several autographs of American and European vaudeville performers, most of whom write inscriptions to Pastor. Autographs include Helena Modjeska, Lionel Brough, and Gus Williams. less

The Henry P. Cowen scrapbook of autographs contains signatures of theater professionals, mostly actors, dating from 1926 to 1927. Most of the autographs are on blank cards, but some of the people responding to Cowen's requests for autographs sent short notes or signed photographs.
