George Sidney Hellman (1878-1958), American author and editor, was a rare book, manuscript and art dealer and collector in New York City. He amassed collections of his own and helped secure major acquisitions for the Pierpont Morgan Library. He founded and edited the literary magazine, East & West, 1900-1901; and from 1919 to 1920 served as director of the American Expeditionary Forces University's School of Fine Arts for servicemen in France. His publications include Washington Irving, Esquire (1925), The True Stevenson (1925), Benjamin N. Cardozo, American Judge (1940), and hundreds of book reviews and magazine articles. Collection consists of Hellman's correspondence, writings, research notes, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1888-1958, contains his letters to and from fellow students and professors at Columbia University; letters concerning his activities as editor of East & West and as art and manuscript dealer and collector; as well as correspondence with fellow scholars and publishers regarding his research and writing on Washington Irving, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Benjamin N. Cardozo, and the Seligman family. Also, essays, reviews, plays, novels, speeches, and biographical and autobiographical works (both published and unpublished), scrapbooks of clippings, writings by others (mostly typescripts), photographs, contracts, and memorabilia. less

Correspondence, 1866-1937, includes both business and personal correspondence, mostly incoming, with librarians, booksellers and bibliographers regarding bibliographic questions, sales information, exchange of photostats, and comparisons of editions. Writings and research files include manuscripts of Eames's work, research notes, correspondence, and printed matter relating to subject areas and to works by Eames. Bibliographic notes contain cut and pasted titles, typed citations, handwritten notes, correspondence and clippings. Booksellers series, ca. 1879-1937, reflects Eames's long and varied involvement in the book trade with materials such as correspondence, bills, sales catalogs, booklists, and publication notices. New York Public Library/Lenox Library papers, ca. 1883-1935, include lists of holdings (rare books, maps, etc.) prepared by Eames, reports on Library activities by Eames, Library printed matter, clippings, and miscellaneous papers. Personal/family papers, 1850-1937, contain diaries, expense books, legal and estate papers, papers relating to Eames's private library, biographical and genealogical information, family correspondence, and memorabilia. De Coursey Fales (1888-1966) was a New York City lawyer and banker who collected books and manuscripts. He donated his book collection to New York University and split his manuscript gifts between N.Y.U. and the New York Public Library. Autograph collection consists primarily of letters, some holograph manuscripts, and a few signed graphics. Individuals represented are literary figures, artists, journalists, religious leaders, politicians, and theatre people.
