Michael Stewart (nee Rubin), librettist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist, was born in New York City, where he attended Queens College. He received a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Yale in 1953. Prior to his work on Broadway, Stewart wrote for television and contributed sketches and lyrics to revues. His first effort on Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie, opened in 1960 and won Stewart his first Tony as its author. During his career in the musical theater Stewart also worked on Carnival!, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, George M!, Barnum, I Love My Wife, Mack and Mabel, and The Grand Tour . Among his collaborators were the writer Mark Bramble, and the composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. The papers are for the most part made up of drafts and scripts of Stewart's works (his major productions, as well as works that were not produced) They also include correspondence, programs, clippings, scrapbooks, appointment books, examples of Stewart's work for television and film projects, and his fiction writing. less

Charles Strouse is a composer of stage and film musicals, known for such musicals as Bye Bye Birdie (1960), Applause (1970) and Annie (1977). He occasionally writes his own lyrics, but usually collaborates with a lyricist. His most frequent lyricist is Lee Adams, though he has also worked with Martin Charnin, Alan Jay Lerner, Richard Maltby Jr. and Stephen Schwartz. The majority of the materials in this collection are scripts and scores from Strouse’s shows from the 1960s through 2000. Naomi Ornest (d. 2007) was an opera singer active in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was later an opera director and translator. Her husband, William Yokel, a writer, worked for the American Theatre Wing (ATW). The Naomi Ornest and William Yokel papers date from 1945 to 1989 and document the career of Naomi Ornest through scores and correspondence. They also detail William Yokel’s production for the American Theatre Wing of the WNYC radio program, Music on the Wing, through correspondence and scripts. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less
