Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a leading American film production company, was established in 1924, an amalgam of three older production companies: Metro Pictures Corporation, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Pictures, and was under the corporate control of the exhibiting concern, Loew's Inc. Collection consists entirely of clippings from MGM's heyday. The scrapbooks were created by Howard Dietz, librettist and writer, who was director of publicity and advertising for MGM and before that, for Goldwyn Pictures. less

Her father, Philip Goodman (1885-1940), was a producer of Broadway plays and musicals. Collection consists of correspondence, literary manuscripts and miscellaneous materials concerning the work of Ruth and Augustus Goetz. Robert Benchley, humorist, critic, actor, writer and director was born in 1889 in Worcester, Massachusetts. His writing career began as early as his college days as president of the LAMPOON, in which he wrote many articles. His reputation as a humorist grew when he became editor of the New York Tribune's Sunday Magazine. During the 1920's he was the dramatic editor for both Life Magazine and the New Yorker. His career also included writing, acting and directing for MGM. The Robert Benchley Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, programs and reviews and document both the careers of him and his son, Nathaniel. less

The Robert Benney drawings are black and white sketches in graphite and ink primarily of actors and actresses in costume for New York City theater productions. The drawings also include sketches of entire scenes and portraits of musicians, radio personalities, comedians, dancers and film stars. There are some photocopies in the collection; most duplicate the Library's holdings of originals. less

Sandy M. Campbell, a professional actor from the mid-1940s through the end of the 1950s, knew and worked with a number of prominent stage and screen actors of the period, and corresponded with many of them. The Sandy M. Campbell correspondence spans 1939-1980, but the bulk of the material dates from the 1940s through the 1950s, the period when Mr. Campbell was active in the theater. Most of the correspondence consists of brief letters to him, though there is one letter written by him to Sarah Marshall. The strength of the collection is a large group of letters from actor Herbert Marshall (1890-1966) to his daughter, actress Sarah Marshall (Mrs. Karl Held), written between 1948 and 1959. Mrs. Held had these letters xeroxed, bound, and privately printed in 1980, and presented copies to family members and friends, including Sandy Campbell, to whom she inscribed a copy. Herbert Marshall is best known as the star of such films as ACCENT ON YOUTH (1935), FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940), and THE LITTLE FOXES (1941), and his letters cover a variety of topics. less

Anne Nichols was a playwright best known for the highly successful comedy ABIE'S IRISH ROSE, which opened on Broadway in 1922, ran for five years, and inspired two movies and a radio series. Born in Dales Mill, Georgia, in 1891, Anne Nichols became an actress as a teenager and appeared on stage and in two early silent movies by the age of 20. Her first full-length work as a playwright was HEARTS DESIRE, written with Adelaide Matthews, with whom Nichols also co-authored JUST MARRIED (1922). Writing alone, Nichols provided the libretto for the musical LOVE DREAMS (1921). ABIE'S IRISH ROSE, a comedy about the romance between an Irish girl and a Jewish boy and the inter-family clash that results, received poor reviews from most critics when it opened in 1922, but audiences loved it, and kept the play running for over 2,300 performances until October 1927. A silent film adaptation starring Buddy Rogers was released in 1929, and a sound version, produced by Bing Crosby, in 1946. The premise was also adapted into a radio series, which ran from 1942 to 1944. Anne Nichols wrote several other plays and directed as well, and later managed property for the Actors' Fund. She died in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on September 15, 1966, at the age of 74. The Anne Nichols papers contain correspondence and writings documenting a portion of her career, with the emphasis on ABIE'S IRISH ROSE. Other materials include legal files dealing with the will of William de Lignemare. There are also files and correspondence dealing with property belonging to the Actors' Fund that Anne Nichols managed for them. less

Edward Bromberg, actor, director, and producer, was part of the Civic Repertory Theatre, the Group Theatre, and the Actors' Laboratory Theatre as well as a leading character actor in motion pictures. His papers contain scripts, correspondence, playbills, press releases, and clippings that document his career. less

Emlyn Williams was an actor, director, novelist, essayist, and playwright best known for NIGHT MUST FALL and THE CORN IS GREEN. Born in 1905 in Mostyn, Flintshire, Wales, where most of his family and friends mined coal, Emlyn Williams was inspired by a sympathetic teacher to pursue a theatrical and literary career. He acted in many plays and films, and also directed the movie THE LAST DAYS OF DOLWYN (1949) which marked the film debut of his fellow Welshman Richard Burton. From the early 1950s onward Williams toured in a one-person show in which he portrayed Charles Dickens. In his last years Williams was involved in setting up a film version of his novel HEADLONG. Emlyn Williams died on Sep. 25, 1987, at the age of 81. The Emlyn Williams papers consist of correspondence, clippings, photographs, and various materials relating to the one-person show in which Williams portrayed Charles Dickens. The material relating to Williams' Dickens impersonation dates back to his earliest appearances in the role in 1951, and includes numerous playbills, clippings, press releases, and other documents. Most of the correspondence in this collection is with Robert Crawley and pertains to a proposed film version of Williams' novel HEADLONG. After Williams' death the film was eventually produced under the title KING RALPH (1991), starring John Goodman. less

Emile Ardolino (1943-1993) was a prolific director, producer, editor, and multimedia designer for television, film, and theater productions. He was best known for directing the Academy Award-winning documentary He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin,' the sleeper film Dirty Dancing, and the comedy hit Sister Act. Ardolino's papers date from the 1950s to the 1990s, and chronicle his professional career primarily through video and sound recordings, production materials, posters, notes, correspondence, programs, photographs, contracts, artifacts, and plaques. While most of the collection comes from Adolino's work as a director and sometime-producer of feature films, television series, and television movies, his early work in multimedia design, acting, and film editing is also represented. less

Parker Fennelly (1891-1988) was an actor and playwright who performed on stage, radio, film, and television. The Parker Fennelly papers, dating from 1911 to 1997, document his career through project files, photographs, letters, programs, clippings, and scrapbooks. less

The collection consists primarily of printed material used by Stephanie Black in researching the sugar industry in the United States and its treatment of the foreign workers who harvest the crop, for the film "H-2 Worker." Included are FBI files related to investigations of the United States Sugar Corporation, 1940s peonage petitions filed by the Workers Defense League, and internal FBI files of contractual agreement violations and abuses of individuals contracted to work in the program. These files were retrieved through the Freedom of Information Act. There is also documentation that the AFL-CIO initiated legal action against the sugar corporations, opposing their use of foreign workers for the available jobs and not American citizens, and the treatment of those hired to harvest the sugar cane. The newspaper clippings from the 1940s through 1990s present a view of the media's coverage of the U.S. sugar industry, along with national and regional public and political positions on the "H-2" guest-worker visa program. U.S. federal and state positions on farm/migrant workers, public response, and positions of individual politicians, both in the Caribbean and the United States are documented in the clippings. Also included are notes, transcripts of interviews, and copies of legal briefs prepared by the Farmworkers Justice Fund. The collection is arranged in alphabetical order. less

The Community International Corporation was a film production company active in the early 20th century and headquartered in New York City. The Community International Corporation motion picture review scrapbooks contain reviews of early 20th century films distributed by Pathe, Goldwyn, Universal, Fox, Paramount, Triangle, Mutual, and numerous independent distribution companies. Reviews date from 1915 to 1920. The scrapbooks pages are arranged alphabetically by film title, and for some titles also include reel lists for the pictures as well as musical settings to cue piano players providing live accompaniment at the theater. John "Jack" Grattan (born John O'Grattan, 1916-1999) was a young actor on Broadway, in summer stock theatre, on radio, and in motion pictures in the early 20th century. He debuted on Broadway in 1921 in Tarzan of the Apes and remained active on the New York stage while attending the Professional Children's School. Grattan moved to California in 1935 where he secured acting contracts with Universal Pictures and MGM. The John Grattan scrapbook contains photographs, clippings, and programs that document Grattan's career as a child and young adult actor. The scrapbook dates from 1920 to 1995 with the bulk of the material from 1920 to 1937. Photographs include production stills and headshots from plays, motion pictures, and Professional Children's School productions, as well as autographed headshots of Grattan's co-stars. Clippings consist of reviews of Grattan's performances and advertisements for which Grattan modeled. The scrapbook also contains congratulatory telegrams, Grattan's Equity card, an autograph book, and biographical sketches written in 1995. Marion Davies (1897-1961) was an American stage and film actress. The Marion Davies papers date from 1915 to 1928 and document her early stage and film performances as well as her social activities with incoming correspondence, photographs, and clippings. Incoming correspondence is primarily fan mail, with several telegrams congratulating Davies on her performance in the 1923 film Little Old New York. Correspondence also discusses the efforts of Cosmopolitan Productions to promote Davies's work and stature as a celebrity. Prominent correspondents include philanthropist Vincent Astor, producer Lee Shubert, and journalist Roy L. McCardell. Photographs consist of casual shots of Davies along with autographed headshots of fellow actresses. Clippings include reviews of Davies's performances on the stage and screen, as well as news reports of her social life and promotional work with Cosmopolitan Productions.
