The major part of this collection consists of correspondence to and from Irving Deakin primarily in relation to his association with Hurok Attractions and as General Manager of the San Francisco Civic Ballet in 1947-48 and in relation to his personal and professional associations with Adolf Bolm, Anton Dolin, and Antal Dorati. The collection falls into a natural chronological arrangement that gives a broad view of Deakin's associations with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Original Ballet Russe, the beginnings of Ballet Theatre, the WQXR Music and balletradio program, the San Francisco Civic Ballet, and the first American tour of the Sadler's Wells Ballet. less

Her papers begin with 74 letters written to her; correspondents include Agnes DeMille, Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Pauline Lawrence, José Limón, Ruth St. Denis, and Charles Weidman. Section II of the Frampton Papers contain 101 contracts from 1920-1936, mostly for vaudeville tours with Helen Hewett. The vast majority of the collection consists of letters written to Doris Humphrey from relatives, friends, and professional associates. As such, the correspondent or correspondents are simply listed alphabetically within each year in the folder list. Also included are a few letters written by Miss Humphrey; these letters are integrated with the ones that she received and can be identified by the notation “DH/_____.” Any other letters (i.e., ones neither written to nor by Miss Humphrey) follow the main list of correspondents within each year. An alphabetical list of correspondents of letters with no date (n.d.) follows the year 1941. Miscellany includes Denishawn weekly schedules for Doris Humphrey from July 9-August 18, 1917; a contract between Ruth St. Denis & Ted Shawn and Pauline Lawrence, 1923; and a stock certificate and brochure for the Dance Repertory Theatre, 1929. less

Boris Kochno, 1904-1990, was a close friend of Serge Diaghliev, serving as his secretary until the latter's death in 1929. The original collection comprising the Fonds Kochno is located in the Bibliotheque et Musée de l'Opéra, Palais Garnier, Paris. Tthe collection was microfilmed for the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library, by Bibliothéque Nationale Service Photographique, Paris, via Hubert Goldschmidt. The microfilm represents Fonds Kochno, Piéces 1-156, which includes manuscripts, correspondence, contracts, notebooks, photographs, a few engravings, sketches, programs, passports, ballet scenarios, articles and other materials relating to Serge Diaghlievand the Ballets Russes. This material covers the period 1911-1929, with most dating from 1916-1928 and one item from 1938. Piéces 1-108 comprise Diaghliev's correspondence. Piéce 112, 113, 116, and 142-149 were not filmed and are not included on the microfilm. less

The first is entitled "Lecture on radium" by Loie Fuller (59 leaves); also includes a draft letter to a friend (20 p. at end of vol.), signed and dated Jan. 24, 1911, including mention of the success of Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nijinsky in Paris. The second contains a draft of the lecture on radium (25 leaves) and extensive notes (25 leaves) about visiting Thomas Edison in his laboratory, light, phosphorescence, radium, Madame Curie's discovery of radioactive matter, stage lighting, the work of the English scientist William Crookes, barefoot dancing, the problem of deformed feet, etc., 1911. less

Chicago-born dancer and choreographer Marion Scott studied with Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Helen Tamiris and Daniel Nagrin, José Limón, Hanya Holm, and Anna Sokolow. She performed in the companies of Graham and Humphrey-Weidman, and was a leading dancer in the Tamiris-Nagrin Dance Company from 1955-1965. She was a teaching assistant to both Humphrey and Tamiris, and, in 1963, was made a Doris Humphrey fellow at Connecticut College. In the late 1940's she began performing her own choreography and for 20 years headed her own company, working with dancers Cliff Keuter and Elina Mooney (Marion Scott Dance Trio) and Don Redlich. She was co-founder of Contemporary Dance Productions, an organization that help provide opportunities to young choreographers to present their work in jointly shared programs. In 1969, Scott, finding her movement severely impaired by hip problems, went to the University of California in Los Angeles where she was Professor of Dance and resident choreographer for the UCLA Dance Company. Hip-replacement surgery forced an end to her active performing. Nevertheless, in 1985, at age 62, she created a solo entitled Psalm 1984,which she performed with the UCLA Dance Company. In 2002 at the Japan America Center, she received the Dance Resource Center's Lestor Horton Lifetime Achievement Award. A collection of personal letters, cards, notes, telegrams, and photographs. With the exception of several photographs from Miss Scott (Goldberg)'s adolescence, the material reflects her association with the Humphrey-Weidman Company, the 92nd Street YM-YWHA, and the Tamiris-Nagrin Company. She trained first with Emile Jaques-Dalcroze in Hellerau and Dresden and later with Rudolf von Laban in Anscona, Switzerland and in Munich. Her debut as a concert dancer and choreographer occurred in 1919. Successful performances encouraged her to open her own school in Dresden, where among her first students were Yvonne Georgi, Gert Palucca, and Harald Kreutzberg. By 1925, her students included Ruth Abrahamowitsch, Hanya Holm, and Tilly Losch. Her students performed as a company, touring Western Europe throughout the 1930's. Wigman performed at the Berlin Olympics of 1936, but the National Socialists closed her school, and she became a teacher at the Leipzig Music Academy. After World War II, she returned to Berlin, re-opening her school in 1948, which became the center for the German modern dance movement. She choreographed over one hundred dances for herself and her dancers but also worked in various German opera houses, staging productions of Gluck in Leipzig and Mannheim and a famous joint performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Buranaand Catulli Carminain 1955.
