The Fergusons were an English family that settled in New York City beginning around 1802. The patriarch, Samuel Ferguson, was a prosperous merchant who established familial and commercial relationships with other wealthy and socially prominent New York families, including the Walton, Morewood, Day, Ogden, Lyde, and Fisher families. The Ferguson family papers, 1727-1943, consist of 18th and 19th century correspondence, business records, financial and legal documents, diaries, and family miscellany of the Ferguson and allied families. Genealogical notes, charts, and clippings dating from the early- to mid-20th century reflect the research of Samuel Ferguson's great-granddaughter, Helen Ferguson on the family's history. less

Walter Del Mar (1862-1944) was a banker, broker, journalist, and author. After establishing a banking firm in London which represented American interests, he returned to the United States in 1914 and wrote books on his extensive travels. Collection contains correspondence, memoranda, business agreements, writings, and photograph albums compiled by Del Mar. General correspondence, 1900-1944, consists mainly of letters from The New York Public Library regarding Del Mar's gifts and requests. Business papers, 1882-1901, include correspondence, memoranda, agreements relating to his company and various other business interests; and papers, 1896-1901, concerning color photography and multi-color printing. David S. Edwards (d. 1874) was a surgeon in the U.S. Navy and served on various warships. In 1857 he was appointed Surgeon of the Fleet for the Pacific Squadron. Collection consists of journal, orders and other papers related to Edwards's naval career. Journal, 1818-1824, describes his voyages to the Cape of Good Hope, the Caribbean and the western Mediterranean. Described are ports of call and places visited including Algeria, Charleston (S.C.), Colombia, Gibraltar, Haiti, Italy, Morocco, and Tunisia. Edward C. Taintor (1842-1878) was an American who served in the Chinese Customs Service. The collection consists chiefly of Taintor's letters to his brothers and sisters, 1865-1870, describing his trip to China, daily life there, his travels to various port cities, the local customs, and business affairs. less

This log book of the May Flower consists of two logs bound together, one dated February 29, 1859-July 20, 1860 and the other dated September 18, 1860-October 7, 1861. James T. Seaver, a seaman of Chelsea, Massachusetts, kept the logs and William Chatfield was Master of the ship The May Flower left Boston on February 29, 1859 and arrived at San Francisco on August 1, 1859, going thence to Port Gamble in the Puget Sound and stopping at Taltal, Caldera, Valparaiso, and Talcahuano, Chile on the return trip, which ended in New York on July 20, 1860. Lumber, which was taken on board in the Puget Sound, was discharged at Valparaiso where copper, iron, bricks, wool, sugar, and other goods were received The second log begins September 18, 1860, when the May Flower left Boston for Bombay, where it arrived on February 23, 1861, going from there to Calcutta whence it sailed on the return trip June 4, 1861 and arrived at Boston on October 7, 1861 less

Family correspondence, 1864-1954, and general correspondence, 1880-1954, contain chiefly incoming letters, many from prominent figures in journalism, the arts, and politics, in both the United States and Great Britain, as well as figures from countries of special interest to Bigelow, especially Germany and Japan. Correspondents include associates and figures such as Henry Mills Alden, James Bryce, Roger Casement, Samuel Clemens, Geraldine Farrar, Henry George, Percy and Ella Grainger, Edgar Lee Masters, Frederic Remington, George S. Viereck, and Israel Zangwill. Bigelow's writings cover a wide range of interests with travel observations, politics, and colonial studies being most prominent and consist of drafts, manuscripts and printed copies of his writings in addition to journals, notes, sketches, photographs, maps, printed matter, and clippings. Materials collected about Germany include correspondence with Emperor Wilhelm II, members of his family, and government officials, 1881-1945, and a journal of Bigelow's trip to Constantinople with the Emperor in 1899.
