The Willard Straight Post of the American Legion was established in 1920 in opposition to the philosophy expressed by the leaders of the newly organized National American Legion. Collection consists of the papers of Irving M. Engel as member and commander of Willard Straight Post. Includes correspondence of Engel as chairman of the committee protesting resolutions adopted by the American Legion's National Convention against foreigners and minority groups, 1944; supporting the World Government movement, 1946; protesting the Legion's support for the House Committee on Un-American Activities, 1946; supporting the Stratton Bill for Displaced Persons and the Taft-Ellender-Wagner Housing Bill, 1948; and urging ratification of the Atlantic Pact, 1949. Also, Engel's miscellaneous general correspondence and papers as commander, 1947-1950. less

Collection consists of correspondence, dispatches, writings by Bancroft and others, legal papers and accounts, clippings, notes, photographs, and research materials. General correspondence, 1823-1890, contains Bancroft's correspondence, 1847-1849, as U.S. Minister to Great Britain with Cave Johnson, Postmaster-General of the U.S., concerning postal communications and postal treaties with Great Britain; correspondence, 1863-1889, of Bancroft and J. Dickinson Logan, with the librarian and historian, George Moore, on historiographical matters; correspondence, 1887, with J.G. Harris relating to the presidency of James K. Polk; and general correspondence with other political figures. There are also dispatches of the U.S. legations at London, 1847-1849, and Berlin, 1867-1870, reflecting Bancroft's tenure as U.S. Minister to Great Britain and Germany. The bulk of the other papers concerns Bancroft's writings and includes some poetry, articles, addresses and notes, drafts, proofs, and various printed editions of History of the United States and writings about John Adams and Martin Van Buren. There are also a few photographs, clippings, book catalogs and lists, lists of source material in European archives, some legal papers and accounts, notes taken at Göttingen University, transcriptions of rare books, and materials relating to the San Juan water boundary dispute between the U.S. and Great Britain in 1872. less

William Bross Lloyd, Jr. (1908-1995) was a writer, organizer and political activist, who focused on world government and peace. These additions to his papers include professional correspondence, files from Lloyd's major fields of interest including satellite and radio communications, the United Nations Association and the World Federalists Association, miscellaneous subject files, and notes and drafts of articles. less

Newton Diehl Baker (1871-1937) was an American lawyer, political leader and United States Secretary of War during World War I. Collection consists of letters from Baker to Thomas J. Howells of Pittsburgh, Pa., written from Cleveland, Ohio, during Baker's tenure as mayor, from Washington, D.C., while Baker was Secretary of War, and later at Cleveland where Baker practiced law. Letters relate to Baker's life and responsibilities in Cleveland, and to national and international politics including comments on relations between the United States and Mexico, World War I problems, the Training Camp Activities Commission of which Baker was appointed a member, conscientious objectors, the raising of bridges in Pittsburgh, transportation of soldiers home from France, President Wilson's health, the League of Nations, and business and personal affairs. less
