Joe Laurie, Jr. (1893-1954) was a comedian, actor, and writer who began his career as a vaudeville performer in the 1910s, touring with Aleen Bronson as Laurie and Aleen. He later worked as a staff columnist for Variety and wrote frequently on the history of vaudeville. In 1953, he published Vaudeville: From the Honky-tonks to the Palace. The Joe Laurie, Jr. papers date from 1877 to 1954 and contain correspondence, writings, scripts, autograph books, and ephemera from Laurie's career. In addition to containing Laurie's papers, the collection contains some papers of his son, Joseph Bryant Hughes Laurie; correspondence of Variety editor Abel Green; and administrative records from vaudeville organizations. The earliest materials in the collection are autographs that date from about 1877 to 1886 and are labeled as being from the "Joe Laurie, Jr. Vaudeville Collection." Materials from Laurie's vaudeville career in the 1910s include an autograph book with inscriptions to Laurie and Aleen and a letter written by Laurie regarding a possible booking. The collection contains some of Laurie's writings, including a typescript of a 1938 article he wrote titled "Vaudeville Memories." For the article, Laurie asked colleagues to name their favorite vaudeville act, and the collection contains letters he received in response to his query. Laurie's correspondence includes a large number of letters from performer and writer William Kerry (Bill) Halligan, dating mostly to the 1950s, which include Halligan's recollections about his career in vaudeville and theater. There is one folder of letters from writer O.O. McIntyre to Abel Green. The collection also includes a handwritten draft of an article by George M. Cohan titled "Nice Things about Managers We've Met," dated 1942. The collection includes two undated scripts: one handwritten script for a burlesque titled Ixion, and a typewritten script for Fern Cliff by William Haworth. The collection contains administrative papers of the Association of Managers of the Eastern Circuit of Burlesque Theatre and the Eastern Booking Agency of the Eastern Circuit Association; these include contracts, meeting minutes, and financial papers, and date from about 1901 to 1910. Papers of Laurie's son, J.B.H. Laurie, date to the 1940s, and include letters from Joe Laurie, Jr., letters from friends and colleagues, and military records including letters from the Royal Canadian Air Force and the American Air Force. less

Richard Hummler (1943-1990) was a theater critic and editor for Variety. He was assistant editor of Variety's legitimate theater section from 1978 until 1986, and editor from 1978 until his death. His research materials date from 1979 to 1985 and consist of legal and financial records for theater companies and productions, which he used when writing articles for Varieyt. The records are marked "Story" or "No Story." Records marked "Story" also have a date for when the relevant article was published. The records are lightly annotated. less

Max Liebman was one of the leading pioneers in producing, directing, and writing several highly credited television productions in the 1950s. Growing up in New York, he attended the Boys High School in Brooklyn, and got his start in entertainment, performing and writing in vaudeville. He was the producer and director of the Tamiment Theatrical Workshop in the Poconos, a summer stock playhouse, and brought the company's show to Broadway as The Straw Hat Revue in 1939. Liebman was a co-writer for Danny Kaye for several years, and was also credited as a writer for the 1945 movie-musical Ziegfeld Follies. Max Liebman Productions was incorporated in the State of New York in 1948, and in 1949 Liebman made his debut as a television producer with the production of the Admiral Broadway Revue. Liebman also launched Your Show of Shows his most celebrated and critically acclaimed television production that same year, which he produced and directed from 1949 to 1954. The show was broadcast from the International Theatre in New York City and starred Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca. The papers of Max Liebman contain correspondence, scripts, drafts of scripts and rewrites, production files, production notes, clippings, legal documents, and personal papers including bills, photographs, and artwork that document his television and theater production career from 1949 to 1977. less

Michael Stewart (nee Rubin), librettist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist, was born in New York City, where he attended Queens College. He received a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Yale in 1953. Prior to his work on Broadway, Stewart wrote for television and contributed sketches and lyrics to revues. His first effort on Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie, opened in 1960 and won Stewart his first Tony as its author. During his career in the musical theater Stewart also worked on Carnival!, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, George M!, Barnum, I Love My Wife, Mack and Mabel, and The Grand Tour . Among his collaborators were the writer Mark Bramble, and the composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. The papers are for the most part made up of drafts and scripts of Stewart's works (his major productions, as well as works that were not produced) They also include correspondence, programs, clippings, scrapbooks, appointment books, examples of Stewart's work for television and film projects, and his fiction writing. less

With its roots in the late nineteenth century Europe, the revue has been defined as a form of light entertainment that consisted of topical sketches, comedy, music and dance, which was loosely held together by a theme. Kyle Renick served first as its Managing Director then, starting in 1982, as its Artistic Director. This collection consists of materials dedicated to the WPA Theatre and some personal papers from Renick. The WPA material includes production photographs, correspondence, administrative documents, awards, meeting minutes, and contracts.
