Jane Dransfield (1875-1957) was a playwright, poet, and lecturer on theater. The Jane Dransfield papers (1892-1957) document the creation, publication, production, and reception of her work, especially her plays. The papers also document her work as a lecturer, her study of drama, and her professional relationships. Gustav Blum (d. 1963) was an American theater director, producer, actor, and teacher. In 1916, he founded the East-West Players, a group that performed one-act plays, including English translations of Yiddish plays. The East-West Players won the Belasco Cup at the first Little Theater Tournament in 1923. Blum also produced and staged Broadway plays and worked as a drama teacher in high schools from 1909 until his retirement in 1958. The Gustav Blum papers (1912-1988, bulk 1915-1953) contain a scrapbook, contracts, scripts, photographs, clippings, correspondence, and other papers documenting Blum's career. The scrapbook dates from 1916 to 1923 and contains clippings and programs of the East-West Players. There are scripts for four plays that Blum produced: The Shame Woman (1923), Gertie (1926), My Son (1924), and Walk Hard (1946). The script for Walk Hard is a heavily annotated prompt copy; the other scripts have minimal or no annotation. There are also three scripts written or co-written by Blum: Against the Current, Eden, and A Sleepless Night. Contracts date from 1927 to 1946. The collection includes a statement of receipts and disbursements for Walk Hard and an estimated budget for Laughter in the Courtyard. Photographs consist of images of Blum, an unidentified production photograph, and signed photographs of Bertha Kalich and David Belasco. The collection also contains biographical information, clippings, and copyright records related to Blum's career, dating from 1912 to 1988. less

Designer and painter Percy Anderson was known in England for his work with producer Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the original productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas (all D'Oyly Carte productions at the Savoy from The yeoman of the guard on). The majority of Anderson's design work on Broadway occurred prior to 1915. At a time when theatrical designers were unknown, Percy Anderson was acknowledged in playbills and his name mentioned in reviews. He died October 28, 1928 at the age of 77 in London. Original designs, primarily for costumes, by Percy Anderson for the theatrical productions of Adrea by David Belasco and John Luther Long (Belasco Theatre), 1905; and 2 costume designs for Twelfth night by William Shakespeare, n.d. For the play Adrea, there are also 9 boot plots with sketches, notes and samples, and a stage curtain design for the Belasco theatre. less

The Otto Harbach Papers include correspondence, business papers, scripts, scores, lyrics, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter documenting his personal life and career, and also a particular period in the American musical theater, from ca. 1908-1938, when Harbach created most of his works. Correspondence is mainly between Harbach and his family in Salt Lake City, and later with his son William. Family members include his brothers, Arthur, James, Julius, and William Hauerbach, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Avern Poulton. Included in the small amount of correspondence from friends and colleagues are several interesting letters from Arthur Hammerstein, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and Carl Sandburg. The collection is particularly strong in covering the business aspects of Harbach's work, documented with contracts, copyright, and royalty information. Scripts form the largest series and include copies of most of Harbach's works. The scores are mostly for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT (music by Jerome Kern) and COUNTER MELODY (music by Peter De Rose) and are notable for the holographs that make up part of the scores for HAYFOOT-STRAWFOOT. There is also a good collection of photographs, including family, colleagues, ASCAP events, friends, and a selection of production photos. Personal papers include genealogical information, writings other than scripts, ephemera and a long oral history interview conducted by William Harbach shortly before his father's death. less
