Sandy M. Campbell, a professional actor from the mid-1940s through the end of the 1950s, knew and worked with a number of prominent stage and screen actors of the period, and corresponded with many of them. The Sandy M. Campbell correspondence spans 1939-1980, but the bulk of the material dates from the 1940s through the 1950s, the period when Mr. Campbell was active in the theater. Most of the correspondence consists of brief letters to him, though there is one letter written by him to Sarah Marshall. The strength of the collection is a large group of letters from actor Herbert Marshall (1890-1966) to his daughter, actress Sarah Marshall (Mrs. Karl Held), written between 1948 and 1959. Mrs. Held had these letters xeroxed, bound, and privately printed in 1980, and presented copies to family members and friends, including Sandy Campbell, to whom she inscribed a copy. Herbert Marshall is best known as the star of such films as ACCENT ON YOUTH (1935), FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940), and THE LITTLE FOXES (1941), and his letters cover a variety of topics.

Julie Mathilde Lippman (1864-1952) was an author of novels and plays and a political activist, who knew many of the prominent literary and political figures of her day. Best known for her novel MARTHA-BY-THE-DAY (1914) which she successfully adapted to the stage in 1919, Julie Mathilde Lippman came to know Louisa May Alcott while still a teenager, and later became friends with Mark Twain, Charles Dudley Warner, actor and playwright William Gillette, and other writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among Lippman's books were SWEET P'S (1905), MARTHA AND CUPID (1914), and FLEXIBLE FERDINAND (1919), while her works for the stage included COUSIN FAITHFUL (1908), THE FACTS IN THE CASE (1912), and A FOOL AND HIS MONEY (1913). Lippmann was a fervent supporter of Theodore Roosevelt, took part in the womens' suffrage movement, and also wrote propaganda for the Allied cause during the First World War. After many years of residence in New York City Julie Mathilde Lippman moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of eighty-five, to live with her niece, and died in that city three years later. Typed manuscript, called "AUNTIE" : REMINISCENCES OF JULIE M. LIPPMANN on title page, undated but written after Julie Mathilde Lippmann's death in 1952, with occasional corrections in blue ink in the author's hand. Memoir written by Julie Morrow DeForest (1882-1979), an artist and niece of Julie Mathilde Lippmann, who records personal impressions of her aunt as well as several other relatives, but provides little specific information about her aunt's literary or theatrical career, or her famous friends. Of special note is the author's description of a women's suffrage march and related activities in New York circa 1915.

Francis Wilson (1854-1935), actor and author, was a member of the legitimate comedy group at the Chestnut Street Theatre, 1887-1888, in Philadelphia, and became involved in comic opera as the leading actor of McCaull Opera Company, 1885-1889. He subsequently organized his own company, was president of the Actor's Theatre, and wrote several biographies, e.g., John Wilkes Booth and Joseph Jefferson, and drama, e.g., "The Magic Ring.". The collection contains Wilson's letters, 1889-1905, to his friend Otto Fleischner (1852-1939), assistant librarian of the Boston Public Library. The letters are primarily concerned with personal matters, Francis Wilson's career as an actor, Wilson's interest in Joseph Jefferson, and the family hobby of collecting book-plates and monograms. The letters were written in New Rochelle, New York, at Wilson's home, "The Orchard" and while Wilson was on road tours. Included as well, are thank you notes from Wilson's children to Otto Fleischner for gifts.
