The Canada Lee Papers document two of the careers of this multi-talented man: his profession as an actor and his career as a boxer. The papers consist principally of personal and professional correspondence; speeches; and contracts, correspondence and other material generated during the production of a play or movie in which he performed. A significant part of the collection is newsclippings and other material housed in a series of scrapbooks. Also included are financial records, and a few artifacts. less

Ewing Cherry was an American stage actor with years of touring experience. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Ewing Cherry (sometimes billed as V. E. Cherry) made his stage debut in WITHIN THE LAW in Chicago in 1916. Soon afterwards Cherry was working in vaudeville in a skit called OUT OF LUCK. He went on to play juvenile leads for various stock companies in such shows as MRS. WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH and THE LITTLE SPITFIRE through the 1910s and 1920s. His Broadway credits include WHAT PRICE GLORY?, SKIDDING with Glenda Farrell, THE NIGHT BEFORE with Franchot Tone, and MARCHING MEN (1930) with Leon Ames. Cherry also acted in radio drama. After a period of retirement, he returned to the stage for a role in the Off-Broadway production of Sean O'Casey's RED ROSES FOR ME (1961), then appeared in O'Casey's MOON SHINES ON KYLENAMOE and in Nikolai Evreinov's THE CHIEF THING (1963), his last professional credit. Ewing Cherry died in New York City on March 30, 1969. The Ewing Cherry papers span 1916 to 1962, and consist of letters to Ewing Cherry from employers and friends, a number of contracts securing Mr. Cherry's services as an actor for various stock companies between 1917 and 1927, three booklets (1920-23) introducing the members of the Gene Lewis-Olga Worth stock company, photographs of Ewing Cherry in a variety of characterizations, playbills for a dozen plays in which Ewing Cherry appeared, press releases, fliers, telegrams to and from Ewing Cherry, and clippings of reviews which mention his performances. less

American actress on stage and film, Fannie Ward was probably most famous for her apparently successful efforts to appear forever young. Born circa 1868, she made her stage debut in 1890, was in Hollywood films 1915-1919, and called the perennial flapper, played teenagers and even a child in late middle age. Her jewelry and her social life were also of note. Collection consists of five scrapbooks of clippings and photographs of Fannie Ward, arranged chronologically, and one scrapbook of typed research notes by Glendon R. Good on her career. less

Dorothy Hayes Stickney, actress and writer, was born in Dickinson, ND, on June 21, 1900, the daughter of Victor Hugo and Margaret (Hayes) Stickney. On August 13, 1927, Miss Stickney married Howard Lindsay. Miss Stickney is a member of Actors Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Miss Stickney belongs to the Actors Fund of America and the Cosmopolitan Club. She was a theatre representative for Zonta International. She was voted in the Theatre Hall of Fame in New York in 1985. She is presently retired. The Dorothy Stickney Papers contain material concerning the careers of Dorothy Stickney, and her husband, actor, playwright, and producer, Howard Lindsay. The papers consist of correspondence, photographs, scrapboks, clippings and reviews. less

Robert Benchley, humorist, critic, actor, writer and director was born in 1889 in Worcester, Massachusetts. His writing career began as early as his college days as president of the LAMPOON, in which he wrote many articles. His reputation as a humorist grew when he became editor of the New York Tribune's Sunday Magazine. During the 1920's he was the dramatic editor for both Life Magazine and the New Yorker. His career also included writing, acting and directing for MGM. The Robert Benchley Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, programs and reviews and document both the careers of him and his son, Nathaniel. less

The Romney Brent papers document his career and contain correspondence, photographs and two scrapbooks. The collection is incomplete in that it contains only correspondence from his later years and photographs and scrapbooks from his early career. Correspondents include: Ilka Chase, Helen Hayes, Lillebil Ibsen, Alfred Lunt, Armina Marshall, Mary Martin, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Emlyn Williams and Peggy Wood. There is a large gap in the materials for the 1940s and 1950s. Some production photographs were separated to the Theatre Collection photo files. The photographs remaining in the collection are special appearances, the State Department sponsored tours and personal photographs. less

Lester Polakov, set and costume designer, was born in 1916. He began his career designing sets in summer stock from 1936-1940. From 1938-1941 he worked on Broadway shows as an assistant to designers such as Harry Horner, Boris Aronson, and Albert Johnson. In 1973 he designed the sets for Robert Wilson's play THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JOSEPH STALIN. His other works include: THE EMPIRE BUILDERS; MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; THE WINNER; and RIGHT YOU ARE, among others. He has also created designs for industrial stage shows, exhibitions, and films. From 1955-1958 he taught theatrical design at Columbia University, and from 1958 to the present he has been the director of the Lester Polakov Studio of Stage Design, now known as the Studio and Forum of Stage Design. The Lester Polakov Papers and Designs consist of papers, photographs, set designs, and technical drawings regarding his set designs for numerous productions. less

St. Clair Bayfield (John St. Clair Roberts), a character actor known for his many Shakespearean roles, was born August 2, 1875 in Cheltenham, England. After Mr. Bayfield died on May 19, 1967, his widow, Kathleen Bayfield, helped to establish an annual award in his name. The award, administered by Actors Equity Association, is given to an actor or actress in a non-featured role in a Shakespearean production. The St. Clair Bayfield collection contains clippings, correspondence, photographs, a poster, programs, scripts and other material that document Mr. Bayfield's acting career and the St. Clair Bayfield awards. less

Sandy M. Campbell, a professional actor from the mid-1940s through the end of the 1950s, knew and worked with a number of prominent stage and screen actors of the period, and corresponded with many of them. The Sandy M. Campbell correspondence spans 1939-1980, but the bulk of the material dates from the 1940s through the 1950s, the period when Mr. Campbell was active in the theater. Most of the correspondence consists of brief letters to him, though there is one letter written by him to Sarah Marshall. The strength of the collection is a large group of letters from actor Herbert Marshall (1890-1966) to his daughter, actress Sarah Marshall (Mrs. Karl Held), written between 1948 and 1959. Mrs. Held had these letters xeroxed, bound, and privately printed in 1980, and presented copies to family members and friends, including Sandy Campbell, to whom she inscribed a copy. Herbert Marshall is best known as the star of such films as ACCENT ON YOUTH (1935), FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT (1940), and THE LITTLE FOXES (1941), and his letters cover a variety of topics. less

The Shepperd Strudwick Papers is composed of correspondence, newspaper clippings, programmes, memorabilia, scripts, and other material relating to the career of Shepperd Strudwick. The papers document in detail the rise of Strudwick's career from "The Carolina Playmakers'' to his nomination for a Tony award for TO GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE WE GO. Included are financial statements and contracts giving salary information for the years 1952 to 1978. The collection also contains information about accusations by the Onandaga County American Legion that Strudwick was a communist and his reaction to those statements. Insight into his acting technique and his teaching career at the University of Detroit is also included. There is also information about the acting career of his third wife Margaret O'Neill. less

The American Educational Theatre Association, was formed in 1936 by a group of drama teachers to encourage high standards of teaching, production and scholarship; to disseminate information concerning developments in the theatre; and to initiate and support national legislation. Membership was composed of teachers, actors, students, directors, and other people involved in educational theatre. Known later as the American Theatre Association, the organization developed and published materials for use in childrens, school, college and university, and community theatres; promoted touring theatre groups; and stimulated creative activity and scholarship in educational theatre and allied fields. Records of the Association consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, directories, application forms, and printed matter with some materials of other organizations involved with the ATA. Presidential papers, 1949-1956, cover the administrations of Hubert Heffner, Monroe Lippman, Lee Mitchell, William P. Halstead, Barnard Hewitt, Horace Robinson, and Frank Whitney. Director, choreographer, dancer and actor Athan Karras was born in Greece, toured there in classical drama, then came to the United States where he was most active in theater during the 1950s and 1960s. Karras was perhaps best known in America for his work in adaptations of Greek drama, especially Sophocles' OEDIPUS REX, which he directed a number of times and in which he also played the title role. Karras also appeared with the Pearl Lang Dance Company, and worked in various productions of PAL JOEY, PAINT YOUR WAGON, Bernard Shaw's CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA with Franchot Tone and Susan Strasberg, Jean Genet's DEATHWATCH with Vic Morrow, and in the Living Theatre production of Pirandello's TONIGHT WE IMPROVISE, designed and directed by Julian Beck, with Judith Malina. The Athan Karras papers span 1955-1963, and consist of playbills, fliers, clippings in English and Greek, and a small amount of correspondence concerning the career of Athan Karras. less

The Cherry County Playhouse is a summer theater in Traverse City, Michigan. During the summers of l955-74, its owner, Ruth Bailey produced and presented weekly plays, musicals, and childrens' productions. Each play or musical featured a different star celebrity. Besides the main productions, Ms. Bailey produced the Children's Theatre Program at the Playhouse, under the supervision of the Cherry County Junior Players. About 180 personalities have been featured as star players in the various productions offered by the Playhouse within a twenty year period. The Cherry County Playhouse was purchased in 1975 by Pat Paulsen. The Cherry County Playhouse Records include information regarding the Playhouse from 1955 to 1974, the years when Ms. Bailey was the producer and owner. less

English character actor J. P. Wilson, known to friends and family as Josh, began his stage career in England where he toured for six years with Sir Frank Benson, and later appeared in a number of plays in the United States. Among J. P. Wilson's American stage credits were THE MERCHANT OF VENICE with Walter Hampden and Ethel Barrymore, ESCAPE with Leslie Howard, THE LAKE with Katharine Hepburn, MAGGIE THE MAGNIFICENT with James Cagney and Joan Blondell, and PYGMALION with Gertrude Lawrence and Raymond Massey. Consists primarily of letters to actor J. P. Wilson. Two letters to Wilson were written by Sir Frank Benson, with whom he toured England in his early professional days. Actor Walter Hampden, with whom Wilson had worked on stage, wrote him on June 5, 1955, six days prior to Hampden's own fatal stroke. Hampden speaks of his role in the new Lana Turner film DIANE at MGM, a role which was taken by Cedric Hardwicke after Hampden's death. Hampden's widow Mabel thanks Wilson for his condolence note. Also includes a few photographs, a menu, and a program for a 1901 cricket match. less
