Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

The American Dramatic Fund Association was founded in New York City in 1848 for the purpose of aiding members of the theatrical profession (actors, dancers and singers) who were unable to work, helping to support members' widows and orphans, and defraying funeral expenses of members. The organization has been known as the Actors' Fund of America since 1882. Collection consists of correspondence and records of the American Dramatic Fund Association. Correspondence concerns donations and applications for membership and financial assistance. Also, annuity receipts, receipt book for 1848 to 1869, and papers regarding alterations of rules and regulations. less

Dion Boucicault (1820-1890) was one of the most popular playwrights of his day. Although born in Ireland, he spent many years in the U.S. (from 1853 to 1869 and from 1870 to 1890). He also was a well-known actor and theatrical manager and a key figure in the fight for passage of a copyright law. Agnes Boucicault (1883-1916), his wife, was an actress who played in the U.S. and England. Their son Aubrey Boucicault (1869-1913) was an actor. Collection consists of correspondence of members of the Boucicault family, some family papers, manuscript copy of Dion Boucicault's play Led Astray, and notes and fragments of his writngs. less

In addition to the dictionary, which was first published in 1916, he wrote a book and articles about Wild Bill Hickok. Collection consists of correspondence, writings and other papers of Frank J. Wilstach and his father, John A. Wilstach. General correspondence, 1873-1933, concerns business matters and research on Wild Bill Hickok. Family correspondence, 1772-1933, contains genealogical information and letters of related families. Writings include articles, plays, poems, biographical sketches, notes, clippings, and some correspondence about particular writings. Wild Bill Hickok materials consist of manuscript and printers copy of Wilstach's book plus photostats and clippings used in his research and clippings of reviews. Bulk of the collection is materials, 1915-1932, he gathered for A Dictionary of Similes and includes original typescript, notes, correspondence, and clippings and other printed matter. Also, John A. Wilstach's scrapbook and notebooks on literature, law and miscellaneous subjects. less
