Marcella Sembrich was a Polish born coloratura soprano who sang leading roles in European and American opera during her highly successful career. From 1898 to 1909 she was a regular member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, New York. She continued performing as a concert singer after her retirement from the operatic stage. Sembrich also became an instructor of singing at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music, becoming mentor to many pupils who later became famous in their own right. The correspondence, papers, posters, and programs in this collection represent the career and activities of Marcella Sembrich and her family from 1851 to 1988. The collection consists of an extensive amount of correspondence with the leading musical figures of the day; posters, concert advertisements and programs from Sembrich (and other) performances throughout her career; and memorabilia including an autograph album with signatures and drawings of famous musicians and others. Series IX "Photographs" also includes some 15-20 original graphic art works among its 2284 items. Subjects include Sembrich, places she lived, places she performed, and people with whom she performed. The sheet music and musical scores (Series X) are currently being processed. less

The collection represents Hoover's professional work as a scenic designer for theater and as a production designer and art director for television and film. Liljan Espenak (1905-1988) was a dancer, instructor, dance therapist and author. Espenak was born in Norway. During the 1920s, she moved to Berlin to study under Mary Wigman. Espenak established her own dance school in Berlin. In the 1930s, Espenak left Germany due to pressure from the Nazis to become a collaborative artist. Espenak eventually established herself in the United States and resumed her career. She opened a dance studio and developed a second career as a dance therapist in New York City. The collection spans her multiple careers. The files, 1920s-1988, contain correspondence from family, friends, and colleagues. less

Charles Weidman (1901-1975) was a dancer, choreographer, and teacher known for his roles as a member of the Denishawn Company, and later for founding his own companies: the Humphrey-Weidman Concert Company, Theatre Dance Company, and An Expression of Two Arts. The additions to the Charles Weidman papers contain material related to choreographed works he performed with the Theatre Dance Company and An Expression of Two Arts; files representing his time with the Denishawn Dancers; photographs; and scrapbooks. less

David Amram (born 1930) is an American composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist active in classical, jazz, and folk music. The David Amram papers, dating from 1937 to 2011, most strongly represent his career path from the 1950s through the early 2000s, documenting his compositions, performances, conducting, writings, and business matters. They also evidence Amram's relationships with musicians and writers, including Jack Kerouac and other "Beat generation" figures. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

Richard-Gabriel Rummonds (1931- ), is a noted hand-press printer and the founder, printer, and publisher of the Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia Press which published fine art limited editions of poetry and prose by contemporary authors. He has taught printing at the University of Alabama and Cornish College (Seattle) and is the author of the manual Printing on the Iron Handpress (1997), Nineteenth-Century Printing Practices and the Iron Handpress (2004), as well as numerous essays and lectures on the book arts. Collection consists of records of the Plain Wrapper Press and Rummonds' personal and professional papers 1948-2010. Correspondence with friends, relatives, business associates, and professional colleagues documents his careers as industrial and book designer, commercial attach? in Quito, Ecuador, and later, iron hand-press printer and founder of the Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia Press, writer and educator. Plain Wrapper Press records include correspondence, production files of manuscripts, proof-sheets and galleys; engravings and lino-cuts; samples of bindings, papers, covers, and completed books, keepsakes, and other examples of his printing. The collection also includes copies of Rummonds essays and lectures and drafts of his books, including an unpublished autobiography, Fantasies and Hard Knocks: My Life as a Printer. less

The Space Committee of the N.Y.P.L. Board of Trustees was established in 1955 to discern the space needs of the various divisions in the Research Library. Its members were: Chairman Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., Edward G. Freehafer, Morris Hadley, Carl H. Pforzheimer, Roland L. Redmond, Deoch Fulton, and Rutherford D. Rogers. The committee was active through 1959. Records of the Space Committee span the years 1955 to 1959 and include supporting material from the 1940s before the Committee's founding. Correspondence consists of letters and memoranda from committee members. Reports, Studies & Plans are formal written findings of the Committee and supporting visual materials. Drawings are architectural space plans of the Central Building. less

This small collection of papers consists of letters to the Sardis on their retirement, a scrapbook of photographs of Vincent Sardi, Sr. receiving a Shubert Foundation award in 1967, a drawing of Eugenia Sardi, clippings about the restaurant, a few printed programs and menus for special events, a souvenir program (1913) from the Screen Club, and drawings by the illustrator, Don Freeman, mostly of New York scenes and people. Harold Gould Henderson (1889-1974) was an American author, teacher, translator, and anthologist of Japanese poetry. He taught the history of Japanese art at Columbia University, was president of the Society of Japanese Studies and the Japan Society from 1948 to 1952. In 1945 he served in Japan on General Douglas MacArthur's staff as special advisor on education, religion and art. His works included books and articles on Japanese poetry and grammar and his own Haiku poems. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1960-1974, with poets, scholars, translators, and editors concerns Haiku poetry. Also, general correspondence of the 1930s, typescripts of writings, lecture notes on Japanese grammar, notes on Haiku, manuscript by K.C. Kondo on Japanese art, and papers relating to the Haiku Society of America. less

Henry Kittredge Norton (1884-1965) was an American educator, journalist, author, and businessman. He was an advocate of aerial transit as a method of urban mass transportation. His positions included trustee and president of the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad, director of Walter Kidde & Co., and member of the New York City Transit Authority. Collection consists of correspondence, reports, designs and plans, and scrapbooks of photographs documenting Norton's efforts toward the adoption of monorails for San Francisco and New York City. Papers include correspondence, 1947-1954; published and unpublished reports, 1948-1955, relating mostly to mass transportation in the San Francisco Bay area; and designs, blueprints and drawings of monorails, as well as related patents. Also, photographs in various formats and scrapbooks of photographs of New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad facilities and operations. less

Gottfried von Reigersberg (1893-1962) was a German machinist who emigrated to the U.S. in 1927. He was born Gottfried Streit but was adopted in 1922 by Emilie Freien von Reigersberg, a descendant of a Bavarian noble family. Collection consists of correspondence, family and legal papers, photographs, and ephemera of the von Reigersberg and Streit families. Correspondence is largely personal in nature and is with members of the family. Family papers include documents concerning Gottfried von Reigersberg; legal papers and correspondence of his wife, Elsie von Reigersberg; baronial papers with Emilie Freien von Reigersberg's personal papers, adoption documents, genealogical information, poems, drawings, prints and other heirlooms; and photographs of family, friends and the town of Regensburg, Germany. less

The collection includes some memorabilia of Artur Bodanzky: 2 batons, portrait drawings by Emil Orlik and Albert Sterner, a tiny photograph of Bodanzky swimming with the child Linda Muschenheim, 2 commemorative items including a poem by Brenda Putnam illustrated with photographs of sculptures of Bodanzky conducting, and 1 drawing inscribed to the Bodanzkys by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of musicians inscribed to one or both of the Muschenheims. Some of these are also postcards with handwritten messages. Musicians represented include: Adolf Busch, Kirsten Flagstad, Sigrid Onégin, Arturo Toscanini, and others. Other correspondence consists of 4 postcards with views, 1 letter and 1 telegram. The collection contains portraits in photographs, drawings and reproductions of drawings of individuals involved in the entertainment arts. The portraits were created by G. Maillard Kesslère from 1925 through 1952, with the bulk of them amassed from 1925 to about 1946. The subjects include actors, dancers, singers, musicians, composers, conductors, critics, writers, directors, producers, and designers for the theater, dance, ballet, opera, radio, and television. The largest group in the collection consists of approximately 858 portraits in half-length, bust, or head only formats, and includes 589 black and white photographs, approximately 30 original pastel or charcoal drawings, and some 239 black and white photomechanical reproductions of original drawings. Over 500 of the subjects in this group are identified. The collection also includes a series of black and white photos of male and female subjects who are largely unidentified, but who were likely active in society, business, or the performing arts. The collection also contains biographies of theatre and entertainment professionals, compiled from 1951-1952. less

Edward J. Eustace (1897-1971) was an American poet, playwright and screenwriter for the Fox Film Corporation. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, drawings, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1920-1971, is with Eustace's associates at Fox, family and friends. Writings include typescript and printed versions of his plays and poems; several typescript versions of Eustace's play, "King of the Mountain," ca. 1934-1949, with prefaces to the 1948 and 1955 editions, and related correspondence, 1945-1951; notes and sketches; and diary, 1891-1893. Other materials are drawings, miscellaneous notes, photographs, financial records, and printed matter. Also, typescript and printed poems of his aunt Sarah Eustace. less

Doug Anderson is an illustrator and author who specializes in subject matter pertaining to the theater. Born in Sutton, New Hampshire in 1919, Anderson worked for several years for the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts in Concord, N.H. After moving to New York he worked as a freelance artist, specializing in theater drawings and caricatures for newspapers in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Anderson's theater work has appeared in magazines such as THE NEW YORKER, THE NEW REPUBLIC, FORTUNE, THEATRE ARTS, READER'S DIGEST, and others. Anderson has also illustrated a number of books, including HOW TO DRAW WITH A LIGHT TOUCH, which he co-authored with Mary Anne Guitar. The Doug Anderson papers consist of drawings or reproductions of drawings by Anderson, two versions of a feature story concerning actress Margaret Rutherford written and illustrated by Anderson, and some correspondence concerning Anderson's work from Rutherford and Estelle Winwood. Margaret Rutherford's note concerns Anderson's article about her, written for Theatre Arts magazine in 1954. Included is Anderson's typescript draft of the article sent to the actress for her comments, her response, and the published version of the article. There are three Anderson drawings of Martita Hunt in the title role of THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1948 Broadway premiere), one of which is inscribed, dated, and signed by her, as well as an inscribed drawing of Estelle Winwood in a supporting role in the same production, accompanied by her brief note of thanks. There are also four pages photocopied from Anderson's book HOW TO DRAW WITH THE LIGHT TOUCH. less

Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) was an American poet. He lived in New York City and also worked at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Collection consists of the Lewis M. Isaacs (1877-1944) collection of E.A. Robinson's papers with Isaacs's correspondence pertaining to Robinson. Robinson correspondence, 1899-1935, with other writers and the Isaacs family, concerns his professional and personal life. Writings include manuscripts (some annotated by Robinson), galleys and published works in addition to drafts and notes. Unsorted papers contain Robinson's will, publishing contracts, songs by Robinson and Isaacs, essay by Isaacs, and printed matter. Isaacs correspondence, 1921-1967, is between the Isaacs family and the family, friends and acquaintances of Robinson. Many letters, ca. 1935-1940, are with prospective biographers and researchers. Photographs are of Robinson and various places and buildings associated with him. Also, drawing of Robinson and poster announcing an exhibition of his work. less

Katrina Castles (Mrs. Michael Schwab), formerly Kathleen Castles, and also known as Katherine Castles, was an Australian mezzo-soprano Lieder singer, a protege of Mme. Lotte Lehmann, and the childhood friend of Australian-American composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks. Her career was cut short by two bouts of cancer. Contains Miss Castles' correspondence, programs, clippings, photographs, and business papers. Includes letters and portraits from Lotte Lehmann as well as notes from Elisabeth Schumann, Kirsten Flagstad, and Colin McPhee.
